Guwahati/Agartala, Dec 30 (NationPress) The Special Task Force (STF) of the Assam Police apprehended 11 associates of the Bangladesh-associated jihadi terror organization — Imam Mahmuder Kafila (IMK) — during synchronized operations across several sites in Assam's Barpeta, Chirang, Baksa, and Darrang districts, as well as in the neighboring region of Tripura, according to officials.
The Imam Mahmuder Kafila (IMK) is an offshoot of the banned Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) in India.
A senior official from Assam Police indicated that relying on actionable intelligence, the STF conducted raids on the night of December 29 at various locations in Barpeta, Chirang, Baksa, Darrang, and Tripura, leading to the arrest of 10 associates from four districts in Assam and one from Jaipur village in West Tripura. This individual was linked via a WhatsApp group called 'Purba Akash', utilized for communication, radicalization, and coordination with other members in Tripura and Assam.
The official further disclosed that radical literature authored by IMK leadership, such as 'Sarbobhoumo', 'Khamatar Malik Allah', and 'Ghazwatul Hind er Sonkhipto Alochona', is systematically disseminated online to indoctrinate cadres and sympathizers. Such extremist content was spread via the encrypted social media platform 'Purba Akash'.
Founded in 2018 by Jewel Mahmud, also known as Imam Mahmud Habibullah or Sohail, a former JMB member, IMK promotes the ideology of 'Ghazwatul Hind'. Following the political shift in Bangladesh in August 2024, it has come to light that senior leaders of JMB, Ansarullah Bangla Team (ABT), and Al-Qaeda in the Indian Subcontinent (AQIS) directed IMK leadership to revitalize and broaden its operations in India.
In line with this objective, Bangladeshi nationals Umar and Khalid were tasked with overseeing activities in Assam, while the head of the Assam cell is identified as Nasim Uddin, alias Tamim, from Barpeta Road. These operations are coordinated through secure social media channels, including the pivotal 'Purba Akash' group, which acts as a primary communication and recruitment hub.
The official noted that individuals in Assam, West Bengal, and Tripura were being radicalized, recruited, financially supported, and connected with the outfit, including those with Indian Passports and previous visits to Bangladesh, along with known former members of proscribed terrorist groups.
Following the political transition in Bangladesh in August last year, it was reported that cadres of JMB, ABT, and AQIS were released or encouraged, leading to a resurgence of their ideological influence and networks in India, particularly through IMK-linked platforms. IMK propagates extremist messages that advocate violent jihad and the armed takeover of India across digital platforms, including dedicated websites and social media under the 'Ghazwatul Hind' banner, officials noted.
A report from Times of Bangladesh highlighted that, according to court data, 346 inmates were released on bail shortly after August 5, 2024. This group includes 128 individuals involved in the notorious ten-truck arms haul case, and members of at least 10 different organizations. In the first eight months following the political transition, 148 members of the banned Jamaatul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) were granted bail in cases related to alleged militant activities.
The STF of Assam Police has previously detained numerous JMB associates from West Bengal, Kerala, and Assam.
