Srinagar, April 11 (NationPress) Union Home Minister Amit Shah stated on Friday that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the spirit of unity prevails in Jammu and Kashmir, with 12 groups having rejected the separatist Hurriyat Conference and expressed their loyalty to the Constitution.

Amit Shah remarked on X, “Under the Modi government, the spirit of unity dominates J&K. Another Hurriyat affiliate organization, Jammu and Kashmir Mass Movement, has renounced separatism, affirming complete commitment to the unity of Bharat.

He welcomed this development, stating, “I genuinely appreciate their decision. So far, as many as 12 groups have pledged their faith in the Constitution of India. This is a triumph of PM Shri @narendramodi Ji's vision for Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat.

It is important to note that following the abrogation of Article 370 on August 5, 2019, the separatist Hurriyat Conference effectively became inactive.

In its past, this coalition of 26 organizations formed in 1993, called for protest shutdowns, observed black days on the country's Independence Day and Republic Day, and enforced complete shutdowns during visits from any minister or Prime Minister to the Kashmir Valley.

The Hurriyat Conference was ostensibly established to provide a political platform for armed insurgency.

In 2003, the Hurriyat split into two factions: the hardline group led by the pro-Pakistan Syed Ali Shah Geelani and the moderate faction advocating a plebiscite for joining Pakistan or remaining independent, led by Mirwaiz Umar Farooq. Even the high court bar association and the government employees' association were at one time part of the Hurriyat Conference.

Both factions were considered separatist and were declared unlawful by the Government of India.

After Jammu and Kashmir came under central administration, the Hurriyat Conference became defunct.

The Hurriyat has not called for shutdowns or bandhs against the visits of VVIPs to the Valley since August 5, 2019. Incidents of stone-pelting have also ceased.

Over the years, as the Hurriyat Conference experienced growing indifference from the public, its constituent groups/organizations recognized the changing circumstances and have been gradually declaring their dissociation. To date, 12 groups have committed to the Constitution.
