Kolkata, April 30 (NationPress) Tragically, 14 individuals have perished in a devastating fire that ravaged the Rituraj Hotel in central Kolkata, as confirmed by police officials.
The fire ignited around 7:30 PM on Tuesday, causing most casualties due to suffocation, while one person is believed to have died after falling from the building while trying to escape the blaze.
Kolkata Police Commissioner Manoj Kumar Verma verified the number of casualties, stating that the fire was contained by 1 AM on Wednesday after ten fire engines were deployed to the scene.
During a press briefing, he remarked, "Currently, 14 deaths have been reported. Moreover, a Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been established to investigate the fire's origin and the safety protocols that were in effect. The inquiry will also examine the challenges guests faced during their evacuation from the hotel."
While the fire's cause is yet to be determined, initial reports indicate that many victims were guests who could not escape their rooms promptly.
Authorities revealed that the victims found themselves trapped within the hotel once the fire broke out.
The Rituraj Hotel is constructed atop a commercial storage area at ground level, with five floors above designated for guest accommodations.
The blaze reportedly spread swiftly throughout the building, filling it with dense smoke.
Union Minister and West Bengal BJP President Sukanta Majumdar urged the state government to promptly assist victims and called for a serious reassessment of fire safety standards.
"I urge the state administration to swiftly rescue those affected, ensure their safety, and provide necessary medical and humanitarian aid. Furthermore, I call for an extensive review and stricter enforcement of fire safety measures to avert such tragic occurrences in the future," he posted on X.
In agreement, BJP leader Dilip Ghosh attributed the disaster to illegal construction and government negligence.
"Illegal construction is rampant everywhere. There are markets in every direction. The government is corrupt and thus allows unauthorized building. This incident is unfortunate, and the government must enforce safety regulations," Ghosh told IANS.
