Kolkata, May 1 (NationPress) West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee visited the fire-stricken Rituraj hotel on Madan Mohan Burman Street in central Kolkata, where a catastrophic fire erupted on Tuesday night, claiming the lives of 15 individuals. She urged the local residents in this bustling trading area not to jeopardize their safety.
CM Banerjee emphasized the importance of safety measures, even if they choose not to support her party in the upcoming elections.
This remark carries weight, particularly as the trading hub is predominantly populated by a non-Bengali and primarily Hindi-speaking community, which is often perceived as being unsupportive of the Trinamool Congress.
“I am not against anyone. However, there are some who ignore safety regulations, which is unacceptable. I want each of you to prioritize your safety. If you decide not to vote for me because of this, that is your choice. But please, protect your lives,” CM Banerjee stated.
The Chief Minister assured that her government would take stringent action against those accountable for this disaster.
Preliminary investigations have indicated that the fire was a result of serious negligence regarding fire safety, ventilation, and evacuation procedures at the Rituraj hotel.
She further mentioned that administrative officials who overlooked these safety lapses would also face consequences.
During her visit, CM Banerjee was joined by the state fire services minister Sujit Bose and Kolkata Police Commissioner Manoj Kumar Verma.
She instructed Bose to inspect other properties that may also be violating fire safety regulations.
Her frustration over the lack of safety measures was evident, particularly concerning inadequate emergency evacuation plans.
“A hotel operator who fails to establish emergency evacuation protocols should not be forgiven. I take a hard stance on issues like this,” CM Banerjee asserted.
Additionally, she announced the formation of a special committee to investigate the fire incident.
“I have ordered the police and the state fire services to conduct unannounced inspections at establishments with complaints regarding safety violations. If any elected officials or administrative personnel are implicated in these issues, they will also be held accountable,” the Chief Minister concluded.
