Three people, including a 17-year-old, were killed and one left critically injured after a black BMW lost control and plunged off the Mumbai Coastal Road in the early hours of Sunday, 20 September 2026. The accident occurred at approximately 5.20 am near Lotus Jetty, opposite Lala College, with the vehicle falling from the elevated road into an active construction zone below.

How the Accident Unfolded

The BMW was travelling northbound from Marine Drive towards Haji Ali when the driver allegedly lost control due to overspeeding. The vehicle crashed through a signboard hanging from the bridge, rammed into a boundary wall, and fell off the edge into the construction area below.

The scale of damage was severe: the car's roof was pushed inwards, the windshield was completely shattered, and the bonnet was destroyed beyond recognition. All four occupants were rushed to Nair Hospital, where emergency medical teams assessed their condition.

Victims Identified

At around 8.40 am, the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) of Nair Hospital confirmed that three of the four occupants were declared brought dead. Two of the deceased have been identified as 21-year-old Shanay Gajjal and 17-year-old Dhirya Seth. The identity of the third person who died has not yet been ascertained.

The sole survivor, 23-year-old Aditya Oswal, is critically injured and remains under treatment at Nair Hospital.

What Police Said

Senior Police Inspector Meena Jagtap confirmed the details, saying: “At around 5:20 a.m., a black BMW was travelling from Marine Drive towards Haji Ali in the northbound direction when it fell from the Coastal Road. There were four people in the car. Three people died, while Aditya is currently at Nair Hospital.”

She added that it was yet to be determined whether the occupants were in an intoxicated state at the time of the accident. Police have registered a case and an investigation is underway.

A Troubling Pattern on Mumbai’s Coastal Road

This incident is part of a broader pattern of reckless driving on the Mumbai Coastal Road. On 3 September, several individuals were booked after Mumbai Police took cognisance of a viral video showing luxury and high-performance cars racing dangerously inside the Marine Drive-Southbound Coastal Road tunnel.

Separately, earlier this week, three people were critically injured after a speeding off-road SUV struck them near PKC Hospital in Vashi, Navi Mumbai. In that case, the driver fled the scene without assisting the injured. Critics argue that the repeated incidents point to systemic gaps in speed enforcement and surveillance on Mumbai’s newer road infrastructure.

What Happens Next

Police are conducting a full investigation, including a forensic examination of the vehicle and a review of CCTV footage from the stretch. Authorities are yet to confirm the identity of the third deceased or establish the legal status of the driver. The cause of the crash — whether overspeeding, impaired driving, or a mechanical failure — is expected to be determined as the probe progresses.
