Mulugu (Telangana), May 17 (NationPress) The Telangana Police have successfully apprehended 20 Maoists and confiscated a substantial cache of explosives and arms, including Insas, SLR, and .303 rifles, during an operation on Saturday, as reported by officials.

This decisive action by security forces is viewed as a critical step in diminishing the Maoist influence in the area.

Following the completion of the Karregutta Naxal Operation within the jurisdiction of the Usur police station in Bijapur district, the Telangana police launched an extensive campaign targeting Maoist operations across the Mulugu district.

The arrests were made from various police station areas, including Wazedu, Venkatapuram, and Kannaigudem, during vehicle inspections and search missions.

Among the detained individuals are one Divisional Committee Member (DVCM), five Area Committee Members (ACM), and fourteen party affiliates. Authorities also recovered three Insas rifles, four SLR rifles, one .303 rifle, a significant amount of explosives, and cash from these Maoists.

According to police sources, one DVCM, six platoon members, and one Jan Militia member have surrendered to the district Superintendent of Police.

Police officials stated: "Over six Maoists submitted themselves during vehicle checks near the Palem project within the Venkatapuram police limits. Additionally, seven Maoists were apprehended in the same vicinity. Another seven were arrested during search operations in the Murumuru forest area close to Guttala Gangaram Guttikoya village, which is under Wazedu police jurisdiction.

The Superintendent of Police, P. Shabarish, has encouraged all Maoists to surrender to the authorities, take advantage of the state government's surrender policy, and reintegrate into society to lead peaceful lives and reunite with their families.

SP Shabarish further cautioned the public in the Mulugu district against supporting underground Maoists, warning of legal repercussions for anyone providing assistance to them.

In light of a widespread crackdown on Left-Wing Extremism by security forces, the Maoists had previously planted IEDs in the Karegutta forests and surrounding districts of Chhattisgarh to deter police and security forces from entering the area.

On April 8, 2025, the Maoists released a statement cautioning tribal and local populations against entering the Karegutta forest.

Due to the extensive crackdown by CRPF forces and police, authorities learned that Maoists were fleeing the Karegutta forest in small groups to evade capture.

Point of View

It is essential to acknowledge the complexities surrounding the Maoist issue in India. While this operation demonstrates the state's commitment to combating extremism, there remains a need for a nuanced approach that considers the socio-economic factors driving individuals toward such groups. The nation must strive for a balanced strategy that encompasses both security and development.
