Kolkata, Sep 9 (NationPress) The legal team of a prominent organization representing the Matua community in West Bengal, under the leadership of Trinamool Congress Rajya Sabha member Mamata Bala Thakur, has lodged an FIR at the Haringhata Police Station in the Nadia district against MP Mahua Moitra for her recent derogatory remarks about the community during a public meeting held in the same area.
Moitra, who serves as the Trinamool's Lok Sabha member for the Krishnanagar constituency in Nadia district, has come under fire.
The legal team from the All India Matua Mahasangh has taken this step after expressing intentions to pursue legal action against Moitra regarding her so-called “anti-Matua” statements.
Last week, the organization dispatched a letter to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, demanding that Moitra issue a public apology for her remarks that have offended the sentiments of the Matua community.
Previously, the Mahasangh publicly condemned Moitra for her remarks and reiterated their demand for a formal apology.
As Moitra has neither retracted her statements nor offered an apology, the FIR has been officially filed against her.
During a recent address at Krishnanagar, Moitra commented on the voting tendencies of the Matua community toward the BJP.
“What kind of approach is this when one remains with the Trinamool Congress throughout the year and then behaves like a traditional Hindu before elections? When you need work, development schemes, or infrastructure, you think of Mamata Banerjee. You come to collect allowances under various state development schemes, adorned with wooden bracelets. Then what becomes of you? I know my speech will go viral. Honestly, I don’t mind,” stated the Trinamool Congress MP during her address at the meeting.
The Matua community, a marginalized Hindu group, immigrated to West Bengal as refugees from neighboring Bangladesh, settling in regions of Nadia and North 24 Parganas.
This community has consistently supported the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the state since the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.
Even in the upcoming 2024 Lok Sabha elections, despite the Trinamool Congress achieving substantial victories in many constituencies, BJP candidates secured wins in both the Bangaon constituency in North 24 Parganas and the Ranaghat constituency in Nadia, areas predominantly inhabited by the Matua community.
