Kolkata, Sep 12 (NationPress) In the face of intense criticism from both external and internal sources regarding her recent remarks about the Matua community, Mahua Moitra, the Trinamool Congress MP representing the Krishnanagar constituency in Nadia district of West Bengal, demonstrated resilience by reaffirming her position on the matter, which has sparked significant political debate throughout the state since early this month.

During a recent public gathering in Krishnanagar, Moitra addressed the voting tendencies of the Matua community, a Backward Class Hindu group that migrated to West Bengal as refugees from neighboring Bangladesh and established communities in areas of Nadia and North 24 Parganas districts, particularly leaning towards the BJP.

"What kind of approach is this when you are affiliated with the Trinamool Congress throughout the year, only to act like a traditional Hindu as elections approach? When you seek jobs, development initiatives, or infrastructure, you turn to Mamata Banerjee. You come to collect benefits from various state programs, adorned with wooden bracelets. Then what becomes of you? I am aware that my speech will go viral. Frankly, I do not care," stated the Trinamool Congress MP at the Krishnanagar meeting.

On the following Friday, Moitra defended her statements while engaging with the media.

"The BJP is misinterpreting my comments. It is true that Trinamool Congress candidates lost in the Bangaon and Ranaghat Lok Sabha constituencies in two consecutive elections. However, the state government’s development initiatives have not ceased in these areas. Conversely, the BJP halted central funding for centrally-sponsored projects in West Bengal after their defeat in the state. That was my point," explained Moitra.

Notably, both the Bangaon constituency in North 24 Parganas district and the Ranaghat constituency in Nadia district are predominantly Matua areas, with BJP candidates winning in both during the 2019 and 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

Earlier this week, the legal team of the All India Matua Mahasangh, led by Trinamool Congress Rajya Sabha member Mamata Bala Thakur, lodged an FIR against Moitra at the Haringhata Police Station in Nadia district concerning her remarks about the Matua community.

Last week, the organization sent a letter to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, demanding that Moitra publicly apologize for her statements, which they claim offended the sentiments of the Matua community members.

Prior to this, the Mahasangh released a statement denouncing Moitra’s comments as anti-Matua and called for a public apology. However, since Moitra has neither retracted her remarks nor offered an apology, the organization has proceeded to file an FIR against her.
