Aizawl, March 30 (NationPress) In the upcoming elections for the Aizawl Municipal Corporation (AMC) scheduled on April 21, a total of 68 candidates have entered the race, among them 28 women, according to officials.
As per a representative from the Mizoram State Election Commission, all candidates maintained their nominations through the final withdrawal deadline on Monday. Voting for the 19-member AMC is slated for April 21, with results to be announced on April 27.
The roster of candidates comprises 40 men and 28 women from four prominent political parties, all vying for positions within the civic administration.
The ruling Zoram People’s Movement, the primary opposition Mizo National Front, and the Indian National Congress each put forward 19 candidates, while the Bharatiya Janata Party has nominated 11 candidates.
More than 2.37 lakh voters, including roughly 1.28 lakh women, across 19 wards are set to participate in the forthcoming elections.
The previous AMC elections took place in February 2021, where the Mizo National Front achieved a majority with 11 seats, while the Zoram People’s Movement garnered six seats and the Congress captured two.
