Key Takeaways
Aizawl, April 20 (NationPress) All preparations are finalized for the upcoming elections to the Aizawl Municipal Corporation (AMC), which will take place on Tuesday, as confirmed by officials on Monday.
Over 2.39 lakh voters, including 1.26 lakh women, are set to determine the electoral outcomes for 68 candidates, 28 of whom are women, competing in these municipal elections.
The Mizoram government has declared a public holiday in the areas governed by the AMC on Tuesday, allowing voters to cast their votes.
“All eligible voters are encouraged to participate in the voting process. On polling day, all government offices, educational institutions, and public sector entities within the AMC area will be closed,” stated an official notice.
According to the Mizoram State Election Commission (SEC), nearly 94% of the 2,768 senior citizens, Persons with Disabilities (PwD), and individuals with chronic illnesses have already voted using the home voting option.
An SEC official noted that the candidates include 40 men and 28 women from four major political parties, all vying for seats in the civic body.
The ruling Zoram People’s Movement, the main opposition Mizo National Front (MNF), and the Congress have each nominated 19 candidates, while the BJP has put forth 11 candidates.
The last AMC elections were conducted in February 2021, with the MNF winning a majority by securing 11 seats.
The Zoram People’s Movement gained 6 seats, and the Congress captured 2 seats.
Although the municipality’s term concluded on March 1, the SEC postponed the election process due to administrative factors.
These included the state Assembly’s budget session, which ended on March 16, alongside ongoing state Board examinations.
The SEC has implemented the Model Code of Conduct for political parties and candidates.
This code took effect on March 18 and will remain active until the election process concludes on April 30, as per an official notification.
The notification also emphasized that no recruitment or appointment activities in government departments, Public Sector Undertakings, or corporations within the Aizawl Municipality can commence without prior consent from the SEC.
This encompasses written tests, interviews, and selection processes, except those conducted by the State Public Service Commission. Vote counting is scheduled for April 27.
