Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Aizawl, March 18 (NationPress) The Mizoram State Election Commission (SEC) has confirmed that the elections for the 19-member Aizawl Municipal Corporation (AMC) are scheduled for April 21. State Election Commissioner H. Lalthlangliana made the announcement regarding the election timeline on Wednesday.
The final date for submitting nominations is March 25. Following this, the scrutiny of nominations and allocation of symbols will occur on March 27, with March 30 being the last day for candidates to withdraw their nominations.
Vote counting is set to take place on April 27. Although the tenure of the current municipality ended on March 1, the SEC postponed the election process due to administrative factors, which included the state Assembly's budget session concluding on March 16, and the ongoing state board examinations.
The main opposition party, the Mizo National Front (MNF), has declared candidates for all 19 available seats, while the Congress party has put forward names for 13 constituencies. The ruling party, Zoram People's Movement (ZPM), led by Chief Minister Lalduhoma, has yet to announce its candidates.
According to SEC officials, more than 2.39 lakh voters, including 1.26 lakh women, are eligible to participate in the civic elections across the 19 wards.
In the previous AMC elections conducted in February 2021, the MNF won a majority with 11 seats, followed by the ZPM with 6 seats, and the Congress with 2 seats.
The SEC has also enforced the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) for all political parties and candidates. This code took effect from the announcement date and will remain active until the election process concludes on April 30, as per an official notification.
As stated in the notification, no recruitment or appointments in government departments, public undertakings, or corporations within the Aizawl Municipality should commence without prior SEC approval. This includes any written exams, interviews, or selections, except those managed by the State Public Service Commission.
Moreover, transfers or postings of officials are prohibited during the MCC period within the municipality. Any transfer orders that were issued before the election announcement but not yet executed require specific written permission from the SEC.
