At least three people — a woman and two girls — were killed after a retaining wall collapsed onto a residential building during a rain-triggered landslide at Kankanady in Mangaluru, Karnataka, in the early hours of Wednesday, 1 July. Three others — a man and two girls — survived the incident, while several injured persons were rushed to hospital, with some reported to be in critical condition.

How the Collapse Unfolded

According to officials, continuous heavy rainfall since Tuesday weakened the hillside, and at approximately 5 am, the compound wall — originally constructed to prevent landslides — gave way and crashed onto the residential structure below. The building housed four families, all of whom were affected. One of the families was a migrant household from Bihar, according to officials.

A survivor recounted the harrowing moments: 'We were sleeping inside the house when suddenly the roof collapsed. We immediately started running outside. By the time we managed to escape, the entire house had been destroyed. We could hear the other families in the building screaming for help, but I was unable to rescue them. I ran to the nearby police station, and the police immediately rushed to the spot and helped us. Later, local residents also joined the rescue efforts.'

The survivor added that their family had been living in the rented house for the past 12 years. Residents of the area said the retaining wall had been constructed approximately eight years ago.

Casualties and Condition of the Injured

The identities of the three deceased have not yet been officially confirmed. Police warned that the death toll could rise as rescue operations were still ongoing at the time of reporting. Among the injured, two children from one of the families sustained serious injuries and were shifted to hospital. A woman from another house was also reported to be in critical condition.

One of the affected homes was occupied by a couple and their four children at the time the wall came down. Another unit housed a couple, and a third was home to a family with two children.

What the Government Said

Deputy Chief Minister G. Parameshwara expressed grief over the tragedy, stating: 'Deeply saddened by the tragic landslide incident in Mangaluru. Six people were trapped in the affected house, of whom three have been rescued while, tragically, three have lost their lives. My heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families, and I pray for the speedy recovery of those who have been rescued.'

Parameshwara said he had spoken to the Deputy Commissioner of the district and directed officials to ensure rescue, relief, and rehabilitation measures were taken without delay. He also said he had contacted Minister for Health U.T. Khader, who also holds charge of Disaster Management, and requested him to closely monitor the situation and ensure all required assistance was extended.

Rescue Operations and Response

Personnel from the Fire and Emergency Services, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), police, and local residents launched rescue operations immediately after the collapse. Senior district officials visited the site to inspect the damage and gather details. Rescue efforts were continuing at the time of this report.

This incident comes amid an active monsoon season that has already battered coastal Karnataka, raising questions about the structural integrity of ageing retaining walls across rain-prone urban neighbourhoods. Authorities are expected to undertake a broader safety audit of similar structures in the region.
