Bharuch wall collapse kills father, son as Gujarat rains batter district
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
A father and his 21-year-old son were killed early on Wednesday, 1 July when a boundary wall at the under-construction World Trade Centre shopping mall site in Bharuch, Gujarat gave way during heavy overnight rain and crashed onto an adjacent residential house. The incident, which occurred at approximately 2.30 a.m. in the Ali Matariya Talab area of the city, left two other family members — both women — safe after they were rescued or managed to escape on their own.
How the collapse unfolded
According to officials, four members of a family were inside the house at the time the construction site's boundary wall failed. The two women got out safely, but the father and son were pinned beneath the debris. A local resident whose uncle's house was struck described the scene: 'There were four people inside; two managed to get out, but the other two were trapped. We called the fire brigade, and they arrived and rescued the two trapped individuals. This incident occurred because the wall collapsed following the rainfall,' he said.
Rescue operation and response
Fire Officer Chirag Gadhvi of the Bharuch Municipality confirmed that the control room was alerted immediately after the collapse. 'At around 2.30 a.m., the Control Room informed us about the collapse of a wall in the Ali area of Bharuch city. Following the alert, a team from the Bharuch Fire Brigade, along with a rescue tender, was immediately dispatched to the accident site,' Gadhvi said. Rescue personnel extracted both trapped victims from the rubble and transported them to Bharuch Civil Hospital, where doctors declared them dead on arrival.
What municipal authorities said
Devendra Vasava, President of the Bharuch Municipal Council, confirmed the fatalities. 'After the Municipal Council was informed, the fire department was alerted immediately. The rescue team managed to save two people, but unfortunately, two others, a father and his son, lost their lives in the incident,' Vasava said. Officials have not yet released the identities of the deceased.
Investigation ordered
Municipal authorities have ordered a probe into the collapse to determine what caused the boundary wall to fail. This comes amid a broader pattern of construction-site accidents during the monsoon season in Gujarat, where heavy rainfall has historically exposed structural vulnerabilities at active building sites. The investigation is expected to examine whether the wall met prescribed safety standards and whether the construction activity posed a foreseeable risk to the neighbouring house.
