The collision occurred near kilometre marker 230.800, within the jurisdiction of the Bangarmau police station.
How the Accident Unfolded
The bus was travelling from Haryana to Bihar when, according to preliminary investigations, the driver dozed off at the wheel. The vehicle lost control, struck a car head-on, and overturned several metres from the point of impact. The force of the crash completely wrecked the car.
Officials confirmed that nine people were inside the car at the time. Five died on the spot, while the remaining four sustained injuries of varying severity, with three in critical condition.
The Deceased and the Injured
The five victims have been identified as Dhunmun (60), driver Vinod (45), Anju (40), Amrita (13), and Divya (6). The youngest victim was only six years old. Their bodies have been sent for post-mortem examinations.
The critically injured were first taken to the Bangarmau Community Health Centre for initial care before being referred to the Lucknow Trauma Centre given the severity of their condition. More than 17 passengers aboard the bus also sustained injuries when it overturned, though most suffered minor wounds and were discharged after treatment at a local hospital.
Official Response
Senior district officials, including the District Magistrate and the Superintendent of Police, rushed to the scene upon receiving news of the crash. Both inspected the accident site and visited the hospital to review medical arrangements for the injured.
The Superintendent of Police's Public Relations Officer stated that preliminary findings point to the bus driver falling asleep as the primary cause. Police subsequently cleared the damaged vehicles from the expressway to restore normal traffic flow.
Investigation Under Way
A detailed police investigation is ongoing. This comes amid persistent concerns about road safety on high-speed expressways in Uttar Pradesh, where fatigue-related accidents among long-haul bus drivers have been flagged repeatedly by transport authorities. Further details are awaited as the probe continues.
