Nine killed in two Uttar Pradesh road accidents on Tuesday
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Nine people were killed and several others injured in two separate road accidents in Uttar Pradesh on Tuesday, 26 May, with crashes reported in Unnao and Barabanki districts. The fatalities highlight a persistent road safety crisis on the state's expressway network.
Unnao Bus Overturn: Five Dead on Agra-Lucknow Expressway
A passenger bus travelling from Delhi to Bihar, carrying over 30 passengers, lost control and overturned at the 262-kilometre mark of the Agra-Lucknow Expressway, within the jurisdiction of the Auras Police Station in Unnao. The accident occurred in the early hours of Tuesday.
Five people died on the spot, while several others sustained severe injuries after being thrown off the expressway. Critically injured passengers were referred to the Lucknow Trauma Centre for advanced treatment, according to officials.
Preliminary investigation suggests the driver fell asleep at the wheel, officials said. Police and rescue teams reached the site immediately after receiving information about the crash.
Barabanki Crash: Four Pilgrims Killed Near Bhikhra Village
In a separate incident, four pilgrims were killed and three others seriously injured when a car heading to Kainchi Dham rammed into the rear of a trailer on the Sultanpur-Lucknow Expressway. The collision took place near Bhikhra village in the Haidergarh Police Station area of Barabanki at around 2:00 am on Tuesday.
The car was completely wrecked in the impact. The injured were initially taken to the Community Health Centre and subsequently referred to the KGMU Trauma Centre, officials said.
Pattern of Accidents: Third Barabanki Tragedy in Days
Tuesday's crashes follow a fatal accident in Barabanki on 23 May, when a speeding dumper truck crushed four members of a family — including three children — who were sleeping by the roadside on the Fatehpur-Bhanoli road near Jhansa village, under Fatehpur Kotwali Police Station. The father and all three children died; the mother sustained critical injuries.
Notably, this is the third fatal road accident in Barabanki within days, raising questions about enforcement of expressway speed limits and fatigue regulations for commercial vehicle drivers in Uttar Pradesh.
Road Safety Context
Uttar Pradesh consistently ranks among India's most accident-prone states. Driver fatigue and rear-end collisions on high-speed expressways are recurring causes, according to state traffic authorities. Authorities have not yet announced any specific measures in response to Tuesday's deaths.
