Five people from Chennai, including a three-year-old girl, were killed and two others critically injured after a car lost control, crossed the median, and collided head-on with an oncoming vehicle near Melur in Tamil Nadu's Madurai district on Monday, 3 August. The multi-vehicle pile-up on the Thumbaipatti four-lane road overbridge along the National Highway is among the deadliest single road accidents in the district this year.

How the Accident Unfolded

According to police, a car carrying five members of a Chennai family was travelling toward Tirunelveli when it first struck a two-wheeler on the flyover. The impact caused the driver to lose control, sending the vehicle veering across the central median into the opposite carriageway.

Within moments, the out-of-control car slammed head-on into a second vehicle travelling from Madurai toward Tiruchy. The force of the collision left the Chennai-bound car severely mangled. All five occupants of that vehicle died at the scene before emergency responders could reach them.

Victims Identified

Police identified four of the five deceased as Sriman of Madipakkam, Chennai; Rajakumari; Ranja; and three-year-old Pranika — all reportedly members of the same family. The identity of the fifth victim, who was travelling with the family, had not been established as of Monday evening, according to police.

Two survivors — one from each vehicle — sustained grievous injuries and were rushed to Melur Government Hospital for treatment.

Emergency Response and Traffic Disruption

Personnel from the Fire and Rescue Services Department, Melur police, and the 108 ambulance service were dispatched to the site after receiving information about the crash. Rescue teams extracted the injured from the wreckage, while the bodies of the five victims were recovered and sent to the government hospital for post-mortem examination.

The accident caused severe traffic disruption on the busy four-lane stretch, with damaged vehicles and ongoing rescue operations blocking movement for a considerable period. Police personnel regulated traffic and eventually cleared the road to restore normal flow.

Investigation Underway

The Melur police have registered a case and launched an investigation to determine the precise sequence of events that led to the collision. The role of the two-wheeler in the initial impact and the speed of the car at the time of the crash are among the aspects being examined, according to reports.

This comes amid persistent concerns over road safety on Tamil Nadu's national highway corridors, where high-speed travel on four-lane overpasses has been linked to multiple fatal accidents in recent years. Authorities are yet to comment on whether signage, road design, or driver negligence contributed to Monday's tragedy.
