Five members of a family — including a child and three women — were killed after their car collided with a truck on National Highway-43 in Umaria district, Madhya Pradesh, in the early hours of Thursday, 9 July, police said. The crash occurred between 3 am and 4 am near Bharaula village in the Siddha Baba area under the jurisdiction of Kotwali police station.

How the Accident Unfolded

According to police, the family — residents of Leela village in the neighbouring Anuppur district — was travelling to Chitrakoot when their car allegedly went out of control and struck the rear of a truck moving ahead on the highway. The impact was severe enough to completely mangle the car, trapping at least one occupant inside the wreckage.

Rescue teams from Kotwali police station, along with a 108 ambulance crew, reached the scene after being alerted. Personnel worked for a considerable period to cut open the damaged vehicle and free the trapped occupant, who was then rushed to the district hospital — where doctors declared him dead.

Casualty Details

Of the five fatalities, three occupants died on the spot due to the force of the collision. A fourth, who had been extricated from the wreckage, was declared dead at the district hospital. A fifth, who had sustained serious injuries, succumbed during treatment. Police identified the deceased as a man, three women, and a child. Their bodies were sent for post-mortem examination after legal formalities were completed.

Additional Superintendent of Police Alok Sharma confirmed that all five victims belonged to the same family from Leela village, Anuppur district. 'The family was travelling to Chitrakoot when the accident occurred. The exact cause of the accident is yet to be ascertained, and an investigation is underway,' Sharma said.

Preliminary findings suggest the car was speeding when it hit the truck from behind, though investigators said the exact sequence of events will be established only after a full inquiry.

Police have registered a case and are examining all aspects of the crash. Authorities have also launched efforts to trace the truck driver and collect further evidence from the scene. The post-mortem reports are expected to provide additional clarity on the circumstances of the deaths.
