New Delhi, Sep 14 (NationPress) The Income Tax Department has reported that over 6 crore income tax returns (ITRs) have been submitted for the Assessment Year 2025-26 so far.
The department shared this significant update via the social media platform X, expressing gratitude to both taxpayers and tax professionals for their contributions towards reaching this achievement.
“We extend our gratitude to taxpayers & tax professionals for helping us achieve the milestone of 6 crore Income Tax Returns (ITRs) to date, and we are still counting,” the Income Tax India account posted on X.
The deadline for filing ITRs without incurring a penalty is September 15. To facilitate the process, the department has activated its helpdesk to operate 24x7. Taxpayers are receiving assistance through calls, live chats, WebEx sessions, and social media support.
“Our helpdesk is available 24x7 to assist with ITR filing, tax payments, and other related services, providing support through calls, live chats, WebEx sessions & Twitter/X,” it stated.
The department has encouraged those who have not yet submitted their returns to act promptly to prevent a last-minute rush.
“We appeal to all who have yet to file ITR for AY 2025-26 to do so as soon as possible to avoid last-minute congestion. Let’s keep this momentum going!” emphasized the IT Department.
Earlier in May, the government had extended the filing deadline for individuals, Hindu Undivided Families (HUFs), and entities that do not require audits.
This date was moved from July 31 to September 15 due to significant modifications in the ITR forms.
These amendments, implemented in late April and early May, necessitated updates to both the filing utilities and back-end systems.
The continuous increase in ITR submissions over the years underscores both the rising compliance levels and the growth of India’s tax base.
For AY 2024-25, a record 7.28 crore returns were filed by July 31, 2024, compared to 6.77 crore the previous year, marking a 7.5 percent increase.
In this filing season, the Income Tax Department has also introduced new online utilities.
ITR-1 and ITR-4, designed for small and medium taxpayers, were made available in June. In July, the department also launched ITR-2, which caters to individuals and HUFs with capital gains income but no business or professional income.
