91% of Smart Cities Projects Finalized with ₹1.47 Lakh Crore Investment: Government

New Delhi, Dec 18 (NationPress) With leading efforts from 100 cities, the Smart Cities Mission (SCM) has accomplished the completion of 7,380 out of 8,075 projects, representing an investment of ₹1,47,704 crore, as disclosed by the government on Wednesday.

As of December 13, 91% of the entire project count has been successfully concluded, showcasing substantial advancements in transforming urban environments across India, stated the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs.

Initiated on June 25, 2015, by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Smart Cities Mission seeks to enhance the quality of life in 100 cities by delivering efficient services, robust infrastructure, and sustainable solutions.

This initiative prioritizes economic development, inclusivity, and sustainability, addressing various requirements such as housing, transport, education, healthcare, and recreation, ultimately striving to create adaptable urban environments that can serve as benchmarks for other cities.

Each of the 100 smart cities is equipped with operational Integrated Command and Control Centers (ICCC), which leverage data for informed decision-making. These centers acted as COVID-19 war rooms during the pandemic, significantly enhancing urban operations including transport, water supply, and solid waste management by integrating advanced technologies like AI, IoT, and data analytics.

According to the ministry, over 84,000 CCTV surveillance cameras have been installed across the 100 smart cities to assist in crime monitoring. Furthermore, 1,884 emergency call boxes, 3,000 public address systems, along with traffic enforcement systems targeting red light violations and automatic number plate recognition have been integrated, thus improving public safety.

More than 17,026 kilometers of the water supply system are being monitored using Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) technology to minimize non-revenue water and leakage issues.

Over 66 cities are effectively managing solid waste through enhanced technology, leading to better route management and collection efficiency.

Approximately 9,194 vehicles have been equipped with RFID technology for Automatic Vehicle Location (AVL), thus digitizing and boosting solid waste management efficiency, as per the ministry's data.

More than 1,740 kilometers of smart roads have been either constructed or upgraded, and 713 kilometers of cycle tracks have been established.

In addition, 9,433 smart classrooms and 41 digital libraries have been set up, along with 172 e-health centers and clinics (without dedicated beds), and 152 health ATMs have been installed, reported the ministry.
