New Delhi, March 11 (NationPress) Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MP Malvinder Singh Kang introduced an adjournment motion in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday, addressing the critical issue of drug smuggling via drones across the Punjab-Pakistan international border.
Highlighting the urgency for collaborative efforts, Kang called for a parliamentary discussion on strategies to tackle the rising influx of drugs and illegal weapons into Punjab.
In his remarks, Kang stated: “While Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann spearheads a thorough campaign against drugs in the state, it is essential for the Union Government to intensify its actions to secure the international border.
“The influx of drugs and illicit arms through drones poses a serious threat to both Punjab's youth and national security.”
This adjournment motion is presented during a significant crackdown on drug smugglers by the Punjab government under the “Yudh Nashian Virudh” initiative, which has led to 988 first information reports (FIRs) filed under the Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act (NDPS) and the apprehension of 1,360 drug traffickers.
Furthermore, authorities have seized 1,035 kg of heroin, opium, and various synthetic drugs.
About 6.81 lakh drug pills and ₹36 lakh in cash have also been recovered.
Kang recognized these substantial efforts by the state government, asserting, “Punjab is doing its share to combat the drug crisis. However, securing the border falls under the Union government’s domain, making it their responsibility to thwart the entry of drugs and weapons.
“The BSF must be equipped with advanced technology and resources to intercept drones and halt this illegal smuggling.”
The MP further noted that CM Mann has repeatedly reached out to the Union Home Minister, advocating for decisive measures to curb cross-border drug trafficking.
“The Centre must take this matter seriously and show due diligence in addressing it. The security of Punjab’s borders is not solely Punjab’s responsibility but a national concern,” Kang stated.
He also emphasized that the Union government should collaborate with Punjab to eliminate the drug issue.
“The future of Punjab’s youth relies on our collective endeavors. The Centre cannot remain passive while the state government confronts this challenge alone,” he concluded.
