Abhishek Banerjee heckled, slapped at Sonarpur amid post-poll tension
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Trinamool Congress (TMC) general secretary and Lok Sabha MP Abhishek Banerjee was physically assaulted and heckled by protesters in Sonarpur, South 24 Parganas district, West Bengal, on Saturday, 30 May, while he was visiting a party worker who reportedly became a victim of post-poll violence following the West Bengal Assembly election results declared on 4 May. Protesters slapped him, threw eggs at him, and tore his shirt, in what Banerjee described as a politically orchestrated attack.
How the Incident Unfolded
Banerjee had left his residence on Kalighat Road, South Kolkata, for Sonarpur on Saturday afternoon — notably just hours after receiving a notice from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) for interrogation. His convoy encountered the first signs of resistance at Kamal Gazi, where a group of women displayed black flags.
The situation escalated sharply upon his arrival at Sonarpur. Hundreds of local residents, including women, surrounded him, shouting slogans calling him a 'thief'. Banerjee stepped out of his vehicle and switched to a motorcycle belonging to a local TMC activist in an attempt to reach his destination, but protesters charged at him.
Several women in the crowd physically assaulted and slapped him. Eggs were hurled at him, and some protesters attempted to throw stones, which reportedly missed him. After being struck by eggs, Banerjee put on a cricket helmet to protect his head. His shirt was torn during the confrontation.
What Banerjee Said
'I came to meet our party worker, Sanju Karmakar, who was reportedly a victim of post-poll violence, and I faced such things. Because of the helmet, my head somehow got saved. This was the handiwork of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-backed goons. Is democracy at all prevailing in West Bengal? Surprisingly, the police were not seen anywhere near while I was attacked. It is not even a month since the new government in West Bengal has taken charge, and this is the situation already,' he said.
Banerjee further announced that he would approach the Calcutta High Court over the incident and would also inform West Bengal Governor R.N. Ravi of the entire sequence of events.
Context: Post-Poll Violence and CID Notice
Saturday marked Banerjee's first public appearances since the Assembly election results were announced on 4 May. Earlier in the day, he had visited Beliaghata in North Kolkata to meet another party worker who reportedly suffered post-poll violence. The CID notice arrived at his Kalighat residence in the afternoon before he departed for Sonarpur.
Post-poll violence in West Bengal has been a recurring and deeply contested issue, with both the ruling TMC and the BJP trading accusations over incidents that have followed multiple election cycles in the state.
What Happens Next
Banerjee has committed to legal action via the Calcutta High Court and a formal complaint to the Governor. The BJP has not publicly responded to his allegations attributing the attack to its supporters. With West Bengal's new government barely weeks old, the incident is likely to intensify political tensions and scrutiny over law and order in the state.
