Kochi, June 21 (NationPress) The future of the ad-hoc committee headed by superstar Mohanlal at the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA) will be determined on Sunday during the association’s annual general body meeting (AGM) in this city.
This ad-hoc panel was established last year following significant controversies in the Malayalam film industry after the release of the Hema Committee report, which revealed the disturbing conditions experienced by women in the sector.
The crisis intensified as numerous women artists, primarily those in minor roles, came forward with allegations of sexual exploitation by notable actors.
In light of escalating media scrutiny and public discontent, popular actor Siddique resigned from his position as general secretary after a woman artist accused him.
As more allegations emerged, Mohanlal and the entire elected committee resigned under pressure.
To manage the affairs of the over 500-member strong AMMA, the same committee was restructured as an ad-hoc body with Mohanlal leading.
However, actor Unni Mukundan, the treasurer, later expressed his desire to step down from the temporary setup.
Speaking to IANS anonymously, a prominent actor mentioned that the AGM will discuss the future direction, particularly following consultations with legal experts.
“Legal advice has already been sought. At Sunday’s meeting, these matters will be presented, and a final decision will be made accordingly,” the actor noted.
“If the ad-hoc committee continues, replacements will be necessary for Siddique and Mukundan. The current joint secretary, Baburaj, could be elevated to general secretary -- a move that has precedent in other associations. However, the final decision rests with the AGM,” the actor added.
With a history of strong attendance, Sunday’s AMMA AGM is poised to be a pivotal and well-attended event.
