Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari has moved swiftly in his first week at the helm of West Bengal's first Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government, rolling out a clutch of executive decisions and introducing a real-time online tracker to monitor the fulfilment of the party's 140 pre-poll promises. The flurry of activity follows the 9 May oath ceremony at Kolkata's Brigade Parade Ground, where Adhikari was sworn in as Chief Minister.

Cabinet's First Decisions

The new cabinet's maiden meeting produced six major decisions, with curbing illegal immigration across the Bangladesh border and joining the ongoing national census exercise among the top priorities. The next cabinet meeting, scheduled for the coming Monday, is expected to focus on women's empowerment initiatives. Political observers have noted that the pace of decisions reflects Adhikari's stated governing philosophy of 'work more, talk less.'

Action on RG Kar Case and Border Security

In one of his most consequential early moves, Adhikari suspended three senior IPS officers over alleged negligence in handling the August 2024 rape and murder case involving an intern doctor at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, and ordered a departmental inquiry. On border security, he directed the Chief Secretary and the state's Land and Land Reforms Department to complete the handover of land required by the Border Security Force (BSF) for border fencing within 45 days. This comes amid long-standing concerns over infiltration from Bangladesh — a central theme of the BJP's election campaign in the state.

Land Reform Signals and Centre-State Alignment

Indications have emerged that land-related laws in the state could see reforms in the coming months — a politically charged prospect in a state where land acquisition has historically been contentious, most notably during the Singur and Nandigram movements between 2006 and 2008. The government has also permitted IAS and IPS officers to attend central training programmes and has begun aligning state procedures with Union laws, including the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023. Political observers view this as a structural shift toward closer Centre-state administrative coordination under the BJP's 'double-engine government' model.

Promise Tracker and Assembly Reforms

The government has launched a real-time online tracker covering the BJP's reported 140 electoral promises. As of the time of reporting, 11 commitments are listed as 'in progress.' Key pre-poll assurances include action against infiltration, exposing alleged corruption under the previous Trinamool Congress (TMC) government, ending the alleged 'cut money' and 'syndicate' culture, and a proposed monthly financial assistance of ₹3,000 for women. Adhikari has also proposed live telecast of West Bengal Assembly proceedings and the installation of electronic display boards to replace the existing system of handwritten notes — moves aimed at improving legislative transparency and accountability.

Political Violence and Welfare Continuity

Adhikari has reiterated support for 321 families of BJP workers allegedly targeted during the previous TMC regime, and reaffirmed his resolve to pursue investigations into reported 2021 post-poll violence cases. The renewed emphasis on political violence accountability is expected to intensify demands for impartial investigations, given West Bengal's long history of electoral confrontations. On the welfare front, ongoing central schemes that were reportedly stalled under the previous government have been resumed, in line with commitments made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
