Will the Seven AEROs Suspended by ECI Retain Their Jobs?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, Feb 17 (NationPress) The seven Assistant Electoral Registration Officers (AEROs) suspended by the Election Commission of India (ECI) on Monday due to allegations of negligence during the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) in West Bengal will not be terminated from their positions.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee addressed the media on Tuesday afternoon, stating, “They will not be assigned any election-related responsibilities. However, they will be reassigned to different roles by the state government. I believe they will excel in these new positions.”
During her statement, she criticized the ECI for acting unilaterally in suspending the seven AEROs. “They were not provided an opportunity to defend themselves. The Commission continually intimidates electoral officers and meddles with the authority of the state government. I urge the commission to function in a more democratic manner,” the Chief Minister emphasized.
Nevertheless, sources within the office of the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of West Bengal clarified that the suspensions were justified, citing violations of the ECI's guidelines during the SIR process.
“No individual was given unchecked authority. The suspensions were based on solid grounds due to repeated negligence,” remarked an insider from the CEO's office.
They further explained that the observers and micro-observers involved in the SIR had repeatedly warned these AEROs regarding their non-compliance with ECI guidelines. “Despite these warnings, they continued to act independently, leading to their suspension,” the insider added.
Simultaneously, the Chief Minister accused the ECI of utilizing Artificial Intelligence (AI) to remove the names of legitimate voters from the electoral rolls, indirectly implicating the ECI's Director General of Information Technology, Seema Khanna.
“A woman affiliated with the BJP within the Commission is employing AI to eliminate genuine voters from the list. The Commission is not adhering to the directives of the Supreme Court in this regard,” the Chief Minister stated.
She also pointed out that identity documents accepted in other states are not recognized in West Bengal. “They are treating West Bengal differently,” she remarked.
