Agra, Dec (NationPress) Prime Minister Narendra Modi has presented a meticulously crafted marble chess set from Agra to Russian President Vladimir Putin, instilling a deep sense of pride among the city’s artisans and exporters.
Globally recognized for its marble handicrafts, Agra boasts a robust industry with numerous prominent exporters, and this thoughtful gesture from PM Modi has ignited excitement within the community.
Marble craftsman Umar, who has dedicated nearly 20 years to the craft, hailed the Prime Minister’s action as a historic milestone.
“India’s traditional artistry is now gaining global recognition,” he conveyed in an interview with IANS.
“This gesture from PM Modi will certainly promote Agra’s time-honored craft. The demand for marble handicraft pieces is expected to surge worldwide, providing small artisans with greater employment opportunities.”
Discussing the intricate craftsmanship involved, Umar explained that creating a single chess set requires 10 to 15 days of meticulous handwork. The stone used for these exquisite pieces is sourced from Vietnam, Bangladesh, and Italy, before being transformed into fine marble art.
Umar expressed gratitude to PM Modi for showcasing the diligence of Agra’s artisans on an international platform.
In a related note, Adnan Sheikh, the owner of a marble handicraft export business, stated that the Prime Minister’s gesture holds significant diplomatic and cultural weight.
“Presenting a marble chess set to the leader of another nation reflects PM Modi’s bold global vision, granting international acclaim to Agra’s hidden artistic heritage,” he remarked.
Sheikh emphasized that PM Modi’s foreign policy is proactive and continues to uplift small traders and artisans alike.
Under PM Modi’s guidance, along with support from Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, numerous initiatives are aiding local enterprises.
The One District One Product (ODOP) scheme, he noted, is facilitating small traders in accessing mainstream markets through job fairs, exhibitions, and direct connections between buyers and manufacturers, thus eliminating intermediaries.
“This initiative by the Prime Minister is groundbreaking,” Sheikh remarked.
“It will have long-term benefits for artisans and businesses. By gifting this handcrafted chess set, PM Modi has not merely presented a product but has fostered a cultural exchange,” he concluded.
