Ahmedabad became the third Indian city — after Amritsar and Varanasi — to be integrated into the international hub-and-spoke flight network under the Union Ministry of Civil Aviation, as Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport formally launched the service on 2 September. Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel said the move would directly benefit international travellers from Gujarat and spare passengers from smaller cities the burden of repeated boarding, customs, and immigration procedures.

What the Hub-and-Spoke Launch Means for Travellers

Under the hub-and-spoke framework, passengers originating from smaller regional airports can complete their baggage check-in, customs, and immigration formalities at their home airport, bypassing these steps at the connecting hub. For Gujarat's travellers, this translates into a significantly smoother international journey, eliminating layover friction at larger transit airports.

Chief Minister Patel described it as a direct gain in 'ease of travel' for the state's international flyers. Ahmedabad's inclusion in the network — only the third such designation in India — marks a notable step-up in the airport's role as a regional aviation gateway.

Gujarat's Aviation Footprint: 19 Airports and Counting

Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel used the occasion to highlight the scale of Gujarat's aviation build-out. The state now operates 19 airports, including three international airports, with the state government continuing to accelerate infrastructure development across the sector.

Two projects were specifically flagged as strategic anchors: aircraft leasing and financing activities at GIFT City, and the greenfield airport under development at Dholera. Patel said the Dholera airport would provide 'fresh momentum to the economies of Gujarat and the country in the coming years' and would also serve as critical infrastructure for the Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit scheduled for January 2027.

UDAN Scheme and Broader Connectivity Push

The Chief Minister linked the hub-and-spoke launch to the Centre's UDAN (Ude Desh Ka Aam Nagrik) scheme, under which more than 679 routes have been made operational nationally. He said the scheme had helped extend air travel to ordinary passengers and converted the aspiration of flying into an everyday reality for millions.

Patel credited the country's infrastructure momentum to the broader development agenda being pursued under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, positioning the Ahmedabad launch as part of a larger national aviation expansion story.

Officials and Industry Leaders at the Launch

The inauguration was attended by Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi, Ahmedabad Mayor Hitesh Barot, Chief Secretary M K Das, Adani Airport Director Jeet Adani, Air India Group Head of Corporate Affairs P Balaji, Tourism Secretary Kuldeep Arya, and representatives from civil aviation, Air India, and Adani Airport.

With the Dholera greenfield airport on the horizon and GIFT City positioning Gujarat as an aviation finance hub, the state's ambitions in the sector are set to grow well beyond passenger connectivity.
