Ahmedabad, June 15 (NationPress) On Sunday, authorities revealed that 14 families of individuals who tragically lost their lives in the horrific Ahmedabad plane crash have retrieved the mortal remains of their loved ones after identification through DNA testing at the City Civil Hospital.
Many families have voiced their appreciation for the administration's efforts in managing the process with both dignity and efficiency.
Authorities confirmed that the DNA of 32 victims has been successfully matched with their relatives, with 14 families already having collected their loved ones' remains.
Dr. Rajnish Patel, Additional Director of Medical Services at the Civil Hospital, stated, "The Air India plane crashed, and we received DNA samples from 32 individuals, all of whom have been matched with their families. All 32 families have been informed, and they have collected the bodies at their convenience. So far, 14 families have gathered the mortal remains.
As the search and recovery efforts continue after the Air India Boeing Dreamliner 787-8 crash in Ahmedabad, three additional bodies were discovered, including that of a young woman believed to be part of the flight crew.
Her body was found trapped in the aircraft's tail section, which had impacted the B.J. Medical College mess area. Rescue teams utilized iron cutters to extract her body from the debris. Two more charred bodies were recovered from nearby rooftop wreckage, raising the official death toll to 270.
After the DNA verification, remains are being handed over to families at the newly established post-mortem unit of the Civil Hospital.
Heer Prajapati, who lost her mother Kalpanaben Prajapati in the crash, expressed, "We were informed about the procedure for receiving the mortal remains in a calm manner. The government and the Civil Hospital provided us with vital support. Once the DNA report was confirmed, we received a call. After completing the documentation yesterday, we obtained the death certificate this morning, and the authorities arranged ambulance services with full police escort.
Another grieving family member who traveled from Jodhpur shared, "Our relative, Khushboo Rajpurohit, was on the flight. Upon receiving the news, we rushed here from Jodhpur. The administration is handling everything effectively, ensuring we face no difficulties.
Among the deceased were nine individuals from Mehsana district, five of whom were from Visnagar. Following DNA confirmation, four of the victims' bodies were returned to their families. The town of Visnagar experienced profound grief as the bodies arrived for final ceremonies.
"After the DNA test, the remains of four out of five individuals matched; hence, we returned the bodies of Dinesh Patel, Krishnaben Patel, Dashrath Bhai Patel, and Dahi Goriben Patel to their families," remarked Visnagar Sub-Divisional Magistrate Devang Rathore.
The catastrophic incident occurred on June 12, shortly after an Air India Dreamliner took off for London from Ahmedabad airport. The aircraft lost control, crashing into a densely populated area near the Civil Hospital and B.J. Medical College, causing widespread devastation and loss of life.
In the aftermath, hundreds of postgraduate medical residents and their families were evacuated from damaged hostel buildings nearby as a precaution.
Acknowledging the magnitude of the tragedy, the government has mobilized 164 teams, consisting of medical professionals, trauma specialists, and administrative personnel, deployed across B.J. Medical College, the Trauma Centre, and several post-mortem units.
