The 149th annual Jagannath Rath Yatra in Ahmedabad concluded on Thursday, 16 July as the chariots bearing Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra, and Devi Subhadra completed their ceremonial journey and returned to the Shree Jagannath Temple in the Jamalpur area. Regarded as the second-largest Jagannath Rath Yatra in India after the festival at Puri, the procession drew lakhs of devotees from across Gujarat and other parts of the country.

How the Day Unfolded

Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah performed the Mangala Aarti at the temple in the early hours, setting a ceremonial tone for the day. Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel then carried out the traditional 'Pahind Vidhi' before flagging off the procession along its customary 16-km route through the city.

As the yatra progressed, Patel monitored its movement in real time through the Chief Minister's Dashboard, reviewing live video feeds covering security deployment and crowd management at key points along the route.

Key Landmarks and Devotee Turnout

The procession passed through the Saraspur area — traditionally regarded as the maternal home of Lord Jagannath — where the deities received a ceremonial welcome before the chariots continued along the route. By evening, the chariots had returned to the Jamalpur temple, marking the formal conclusion of the yatra.

Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi described the turnout as exceptional. 'The highest number of devotees have participated in the darshan of this Rath Yatra,' he said, adding that 'excellent arrangements were made by Ahmedabad Police, Gujarat Police, and the administration for all the devotees, and the procession is moving ahead right on time.'

Security and Surveillance Operations

Authorities mounted one of the most extensive security operations in the event's recent history. More than 31,000 police personnel, backed by Rapid Action Force units and other agencies, were deployed across the route. The security apparatus included artificial intelligence-enabled surveillance, drones, facial recognition systems, high-resolution CCTV cameras, body-worn cameras, and cyber monitoring tools to detect and counter rumours and misinformation in real time.

Emergency medical teams and civic agencies remained on standby throughout the day, providing medical assistance, traffic management, and essential services to ensure the smooth completion of the centuries-old procession.

The Ahmedabad Rath Yatra holds a distinct place in India's religious calendar, having been observed continuously for nearly a century and a half. This is the 149th edition of the procession, which follows rituals and a route that have remained largely unchanged across generations. Its scale — drawing lakhs of pilgrims and requiring a security force of tens of thousands — underscores its status as one of Gujarat's most important annual religious events.
