Chennai, Oct 10 (NationPress) The General Secretary of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and Tamil Nadu Opposition Leader, Edappadi K Palaniswami, on Friday charged the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam government with serious negligence, asserting that its health department failed to take action against a pharmaceutical company based in Kanchipuram. This firm is allegedly responsible for a contaminated cough syrup that led to the deaths of over 20 children in Madhya Pradesh.
Palaniswami questioned how the state government could be oblivious to the operations of this pharmaceutical company, especially in light of such tragic fatalities, pointing to its negligence regarding public safety.
"The Tamil Nadu government seems unaware of this contentious cough syrup manufacturer operating in Kanchipuram district. After consuming this cough syrup, 20 children tragically lost their lives in Madhya Pradesh. Despite these fatalities, the health department of Tamil Nadu is oblivious to this company's existence in our state," he stated during a public gathering in Namakkal, about 360 km from Chennai, late Wednesday evening.
The Kanchipuram-based Sresan Pharmaceuticals is alleged to have produced the tainted Coldrif cough syrup, which has already resulted in multiple states prohibiting its distribution following the tragic deaths.
Criticizing the government led by MK Stalin, Palaniswami expressed that "one can now comprehend how the DMK government prioritizes the state and its citizens" and added that this incident arose due to the negligence of the state’s health department.
“These children died after consuming the hazardous cough syrup. Yet, the Tamil Nadu government and the health department claim ignorance of the company producing such medicines. What level of concern does the government have for its populace? How does it safeguard the state?” he questioned.
The former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu also highlighted accusations made by a minister from Madhya Pradesh, attributing the fatalities to the negligence of the Tamil Nadu health department. Palaniswami noted that the Tamil Nadu government only acknowledged the situation after the arrest of the company's owner by the Madhya Pradesh Police.
On Wednesday, police apprehended Govindan Ranganathan (75), the owner of Sresan Pharmaceuticals.
“The DMK government will endure for merely seven more months. After that, we will reclaim power to ensure responsible governance in the state,” the AIADMK leader asserted.
The pharmaceutical company is currently facing intense scrutiny due to the widespread contamination of its cough syrup product.
This incident has heightened political discussions, with the Opposition demanding greater accountability and enhanced regulatory oversight of drug manufacturing facilities operating within the state.
