New Delhi, June 22 (NationPress) An Air India flight traveling from Birmingham in the UK to Delhi was diverted to Riyadh on Saturday night after a bomb threat was reported on board, as confirmed by the airline on Sunday.
The airline stated that flight AI114 landed safely in Riyadh, where extensive security checks were conducted.
Flight tracking service Flightradar24 reported that the aircraft took off from Birmingham at 8:26 p.m. and was on its way to Delhi when the emergency diversion became necessary.
Air India later released a statement indicating that all passengers were unharmed and that arrangements were being made for their onward travel.
"We sincerely regret the disruption caused to our passengers due to this unexpected incident. Alternative travel arrangements are in progress to ensure passengers reach their final destinations,” said a spokesperson for the airline.
The airline, owned by the Tata Group, has recently implemented enhanced safety measures in light of a tragic accident in Ahmedabad on June 12.
In response, Air India has enforced stricter pre-flight safety protocols and has temporarily reduced flight frequencies to maintain operational efficiency.
The airline also noted that issues such as airspace restrictions in the Middle East, night curfews at airports in Europe and East Asia, and general air traffic congestion are contributing to delays and cancellations.
This incident marks yet another challenge for Air India. On June 13, another flight, AI379, from Phuket, Thailand to New Delhi had to return to Phuket shortly after takeoff due to a bomb threat.
The plane, carrying 156 passengers, circled over the Andaman Sea before safely returning to Phuket International Airport.
Thai airport authorities confirmed the emergency landing but did not provide further details regarding the nature of the threat. Air India has refrained from making a public statement about that specific incident.
