The Sri Akal Takht Sahib, the highest temporal seat of Sikh authority, on 16 June declared Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann as Panth Virodhi (anti-Panth) and Guru Virodhi (anti-Guru), triggering sharp political reactions from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and raising questions about the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government's standing among Sikh voters in the state.

Jathedar Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargaj addressed a viral video that allegedly shows Chief Minister Mann under the influence of alcohol and sprinkling droplets on photographs of the Guru Sahibs. According to Gargaj, the video was examined by two prominent laboratories, which reportedly concluded that it was neither fake nor AI-generated. On the basis of this finding, the Panj Singh Sahib at Sri Akal Takht Sahib issued the formal declaration against Mann, also terming him 'Guru Dokhi' (one who betrays the Guru).

BJP's Political Response

BJP leader Amit Malviya described the Akal Takht's pronouncement as a 'significant development in Punjab's political and religious landscape,' highlighting it in a post on X. Malviya wrote that such declarations are 'not merely symbolic but can reshape discourse in the state, where religious sentiment and political authority often intersect.' He added: 'For millions of Sikhs, reverence towards the Guru Sahibs and Sikh maryada is non-negotiable. The statements made by the Akal Takht today are therefore likely to have far-reaching political and social consequences.'

Punjab BJP President Kewal Singh Dhillon went further, demanding Mann's immediate resignation. Dhillon said in a statement that when 'a person is declared Guru Dokhi and anti-Khalsa Panth by Sri Akal Takht Sahib, it carries serious social and moral consequences.' He warned that Sikh ministers and officials serving within the Punjab government could also 'find themselves in an uncomfortable position,' potentially affecting the government's administrative functioning and decision-making — concerns he described as particularly serious for a border state.

The Akal Takht's edicts, known as hukamnamas, carry immense moral and spiritual authority for the global Sikh community. A declaration of Panth Virodhi or Guru Dokhi is among the most severe censures the institution can issue, historically capable of altering political fortunes in Punjab, where Sikh religious identity and electoral politics are deeply intertwined.
