Akhada Parishad Leader Mahant Ravindra Puri Critiques 'Shahi' Terminology for Ritual Bath at Maha Kumbh (IANS Exclusive)

Mahakumbh Nagar, Dec 31 (NationPress) The President of the Akhil Bharatiya Akhada Parishad, Mahant Ravindra Puri, engaged in an exclusive interview with IANS on Tuesday, where he expressed his thoughts on numerous significant matters, spanning religious, cultural, and political domains.
When asked about the term ‘Shahi Snan’ (royal bath) associated with Kumbh, Mahant Puri objected, stating that it is an Urdu term, and proposed the use of ‘Rajsi’ (royal) instead.
He emphasized that “the terminology utilized in our Sanatan tradition is intricately linked to Indian heritage. Although Urdu and Hindi share a historical relationship, in religious and cultural contexts, the preference leans towards Sanskrit or Hindi.”
Supporting RSS Chief Mohan Bhagwat, Mahant Ravindra Puri remarked that Bhagwat is a steadfast protector of Sanatan Dharma, contributing significantly to the community. He clarified that Bhagwat’s remarks were never aimed at intensifying Hindu-Muslim conflicts, but rather focused on the preservation of religion and culture. “His message was also directed at Muslims, urging them to coexist in harmony and unity,” he added.
When addressing another inquiry, Mahant Puri asserted that under PM Modi’s guidance, Sanatan Dharma encounters no threats. He commended the Prime Minister for defending Hindu culture, stating that previous adversaries are now concealed, and as long as PM Modi is in office, the faith will remain secure. He remarked, “If PM Modi were to depart, those adversaries might return, but the Hindu community is now unified and ready for any challenge.”
In response to the question regarding the restriction of non-Hindus from setting up stalls during Kumbh, Mahant Puri clarified that they have never opposed non-Hindu individuals. He highlighted that opposition should only be directed at those who undermine the community, noting that many of the community’s artisans, shopkeepers, and contractors are Muslims, with whom they have historically maintained a harmonious relationship.
However, he voiced strong disapproval of individuals who engage in malicious acts, such as tainting food and drink, stressing that such entities should be excluded from society. The goal is to ensure that the Kumbh Mela remains pristine, beautiful, and tranquil, conveying a positive message.
Mahant Puri also elaborated on the significance of the Kumbh Mela and the Ganga, asserting that the event should epitomize the purity of Sanatan culture. He noted that both the government and saints are collaborating to make the Ganga’s water potable, and those disseminating negative information about the river's water quality are mistaken.
On the political landscape, Mahant Puri stated that those against the concept of a Hindu nation should recognize that since PM Modi took office, the ideology of a Hindu Rashtra has gained momentum. He proclaimed that India has already transformed into a Hindu nation under PM Modi's leadership. The Prime Minister’s personal devotion, illustrated through his visits to temples and expressions of faith, is a point of pride for Hindus, as no previous Prime Minister has demonstrated such dedication.
In reaction to Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav’s critique of the Kumbh Mela arrangements, Mahant Puri commented that Yadav has never supported saints and continuously pursues his political agenda.
He invited Yadav to visit the Kumbh and observe the arrangements, suggesting that a firsthand experience would provide him with a clearer understanding of the situation. He underscored the importance of fortifying the roots of Sanatan Dharma and culture, reminding that many mosques in India were once temples, a historical fact that should be recognized and passed down to future generations.
Addressing the matter of Muslim access to the Kumbh area, Mahant Puri stated that there should be no restrictions for good non-Hindus, including officials. However, limitations will be enforced on those with “jihadi perspectives” who aim to corrupt the religion and attempt to erase Sanatan culture. He reiterated that the objective is to maintain peace and harmony in the Kumbh area, avoiding communal strife.
Regarding the establishment of a Sanatan Board, Mahant Puri referenced the historical context where the first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, allocated land to the Waqf Board for non-Hindus, while Hindus received nothing.
He pointed out that today, non-Hindus assert ownership of land for public infrastructure like the Parliament building, airports, and railways, while the Sanatan community possesses little. He proposed the formation of a Sanatan Board to claim 80 percent of the land designated for the Waqf Board, asserting that this would be determined following discussions with saints and the public.
