Is Akhilesh Labeling the UP Budget as a 'Farewell' Exercise?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Lucknow, Feb 11 (NationPress) The chief of the Samajwadi Party, Akhilesh Yadav, labeled the Uttar Pradesh Budget for 2026-27 as a 'farewell Budget', asserting that despite its impressive scale, the Yogi Adityanath administration has not succeeded in properly utilizing the funds allocated to essential sectors.
During a press briefing, Yadav started with a riddle, stating: “Today we want to start with a riddle — ‘Jab muh khola, tab bura bola (Whenever they opened their mouth, they spoke ill)’. Can you guess who we are referring to?”
“This Budget marks a farewell, and it also confirms the BJP’s exit,” he remarked.
The Uttar Pradesh government has introduced a Budget exceeding Rs 9 lakh crore, branding it as the largest in the state's history. However, Yadav challenged the actual spending figures, questioning, “While the Budget is substantial, what is the actual expenditure? If we compare it with the previous Budget, the average expenditure stands at just 50%. The government is not managing to spend effectively.”
By providing department-specific data, the SP leader indicated that only 57% of the agriculture budget has been utilized, 36% in rural development, around 60% in animal husbandry, 58% in health, and 53% in women's welfare. In the area of basic and primary education, a sector he deemed critical, merely 62% of the budget has been spent.
“This starkly illustrates governance failure. The government announces grand figures but falters in execution,” he asserted.
Yadav further scrutinized the state’s economic assertions, positing that if Uttar Pradesh aspires to become a three-trillion-dollar economy, its Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) should approximate Rs 90 lakh crore. “There exists a considerable disparity between claims and reality,” he pointed out.
He also expressed worries regarding MSMEs, job creation, healthcare, and law enforcement, claiming that the Budget appears to serve more as a political maneuver than as a definitive plan for progress.
