Hyderabad, Sep 25 (NationPress) An alert has been issued in Telangana due to the forecast of heavy rains over the coming two days, as relentless downpours have been affecting portions of the northern Telangana region since Wednesday evening.
The Godavari River was swollen in the town of Basar within the Nirmal district on Thursday, continuing to receive significant inflows from upstream.
Water overflowed onto the road linking the Saraswati temple to the Godavari Pushkar Ghat. Authorities have set up barricades to restrict pilgrims from accessing the road.
The Godavari River also experienced high water levels at Kandakurthy Triveni Sangam in the Nizamabad district, with flood inflows rising in both the Godavari and Manjeera rivers.
A bridge connecting Telangana and Maharashtra was submerged, halting vehicular traffic.
In the Nizamabad district, the Sriram Sagar project saw large inflows, receiving 2.85 lakh cusecs while authorities discharged 3.56 lakh cusecs downstream.
The water level in Sriram Sagar stood at 1,082 feet, close to its full capacity of 1,091 feet.
Heavy rainfall has impacted coal production in the mines of the state-owned Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL) in the Ramagundam and Peddapalli districts since Wednesday night.
The IMD has predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall across various districts in the upcoming two days. Meanwhile, Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy has instructed all departments to remain alert. He emphasized maintaining utmost caution in light of the Meteorological Department's forecasts.
District Collectors throughout the state have been urged to stay on high alert and assess the situation. The CM advised that if necessary, residents of low-lying areas should be evacuated early and moved to rehabilitation centers. Inspections of all causeways should be conducted, and areas prone to waterlogging on roads should be identified in advance, with traffic movements restricted accordingly.
The Electricity Department has been directed to ensure a continuous power supply and to promptly remove any hanging wires to mitigate risks to human safety.
Although schools and colleges are closed for the Dussehra holidays, the CM has urged educational institutions to remain vigilant regarding heavy rainfall alerts. Citizens have been advised to refrain from venturing out during the rains unless absolutely necessary.
