Guwahati, Dec 31 (NationPress) As the Assam Assembly elections approach, the president of Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and state minister, Atul Bora, stated on Wednesday that the forthcoming months will be critical for bolstering regional political entities in Assam. He emphasized that the party’s partnership with the BJP is a “natural alliance” and will persist in the future.
During a gathering with party members, Bora highlighted that the AGP is preparing to amplify its organizational initiatives and advocate for its vision of an Atmanirbhar Assam. He announced plans to roll out various programs aimed at enhancing institutional development and generating income at the household level, thereby empowering communities throughout the state.
Bora asserted that the AGP will exert maximum effort to broaden its organizational presence and political significance leading up to the important Assembly elections.
Taking a strong political stance, the AGP leader identified the Congress-led UPA as the party’s primary political adversary. He recalled the Assam Agitation, during which 855 individuals lost their lives while Congress was in power. “This is why the UPA is our main opposition,” Bora declared, reaffirming the AGP’s commitment to the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA).
He noted that since 2020, the AGP has been a vital part of the NDA and has consistently participated in elections alongside it. Bora reminisced about how the AGP and BJP collaboratively contested the 2016 Assembly elections, which culminated in the NDA forming the government in Assam, and again partnered for the 2021 elections.
On the topic of delimitation, Bora mentioned that the process has concluded while maintaining the total number of Assembly seats at 126. He pointed out that significant infiltration has caused major demographic shifts in Assam, stating that delimitation has long been a key demand of the AGP. “The Central government has executed delimitation, and politically it has benefited us,” he added.
Emphasizing the party’s forward-looking approach, Bora revealed that the AGP is prioritizing youth engagement by bringing in new and young leaders to establish a robust leadership pipeline for the future.
Discussing the rationale for the AGP’s ongoing collaboration with the BJP, Bora highlighted that the BJP had supported the Assam Movement and shares the AGP’s dedication to halting infiltration. “Infiltration must be permanently addressed. The AGP has long insisted on bolstering the second line of defense to effectively safeguard the border,” he stated.
Bora also mentioned that Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has assigned him the responsibility of overseeing the Assam Accord department, adding that the implementation of this historic Accord is being pursued with diligence and urgency.
