Is the BJP Using Women's Issues for Political Gain? Karnataka Home Minister Responds
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Bengaluru, Jan 8 (NationPress) In light of the BJP's allegations regarding the purported assault and stripping incident involving a female party worker, Karnataka's Home Minister G. Parameshwara emphasized that the BJP should refrain from politicizing matters concerning women and affirmed that the government supports the police department's statement.
He elaborated that the police clarified that the BJP worker stripped herself during her arrest, causing a disturbance.
While addressing the media in Bengaluru on Thursday, Parameshwara remarked, “The Hubballi-Dharwad Police Commissioner N. Shashikumar has provided a clear explanation, and I uphold that statement. There is no further discussion needed. If anyone wishes to politicize this, we are prepared to manage it. The provided clarification is adequate. Let the BJP pursue their allegations.”
He further stated, “Commissioner Shashikumar has explicitly mentioned that the police did not strip her; she stripped herself during the arrest. What more clarification is necessary? It is inappropriate to inject politics into every situation. They should focus their political strategies elsewhere.”
Parameshwara insisted that exploiting issues concerning women for political gain is unacceptable. “We will not target political party members based on their affiliations. The police cannot and will not act in such a manner,” he asserted.
The incident involving the alleged assault and stripping of a BJP woman worker occurred in Hubballi, Karnataka, reportedly linked to a dispute arising from a voter revision exercise. A video purportedly showing the incident emerged on Wednesday, eliciting widespread shock and concern. The incident transpired within the jurisdiction of the Keshvapur police station in Hubballi. Sources indicate that the BJP worker, Sujatha Handi, also known as Vijayalaxmi Handi, was allegedly assaulted following a complaint filed against her by Congress corporator Suvarna Kallakuntla.
It is alleged that Sujatha Handi was targeted after participating in voter mapping as part of the voter list revision process. Reportedly incensed by her actions, the Congress corporator filed a complaint at the Keshvapur police station.
The Karnataka Police dismissed the BJP worker's assertions that she was assaulted and stripped by law enforcement during the voter revision dispute in Hubballi.
Addressing the allegations of assault and stripping involving both male and female police personnel, Police Commissioner N. Shashikumar refuted the claims, stating that she “had stripped herself.”
An FIR was filed against nine individuals at the Keshwapur police station in Hubballi on Thursday.
According to police reports, charges have been leveled against Hubballi-Dharwad Municipal Corporation Congress member Suvarna Kalakuntla and seven others, with serious charges including attempt to murder, criminal intimidation, and rioting.
The FIR was initiated based on a complaint from Mariadas, brother of the victim, BJP activist Sujatha Handi, concerning an incident that allegedly took place on January 2 in Chalukya Nagar, Hubballi. The accused are facing charges under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
BJP workers conducted protests demanding action against Congress corporator Suvarna Kalakuntla, prompting police intervention. The demonstration was led by former BJP MLA Seema Masuti, Mayor Jyoti Patil, and Deputy Mayor Santosh Chauhan.
