Kolkata, Jan 8 (NationPress) The Chief Minister of West Bengal, Mamata Banerjee, expressed her outrage on Thursday regarding the Enforcement Directorate's (ED) raids at the offices of the vote-strategy agency India Political Action Committee (I-PAC) located in Salt Lake, on the northern outskirts of Kolkata. The raids also extended to the residence of I-PAC's co-founder, Pratik Jain, on Loudon Street in central Kolkata.
Banerjee labeled the ED's actions as orchestrated by Amit Shah, the Union Home Minister, whom she labeled as the “naughtiest and nastiest” home minister in the country.
Upon learning of the simultaneous ED actions at both locations, accompanied by personnel from the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF), Banerjee, along with Kolkata Police Commissioner Manoj Kumar Verma, arrived at Jain’s residence on Thursday afternoon.
After a brief visit inside the residence, she emerged to address the media, criticizing both the Union Home Minister and the ED regarding the situation.
“The ED officials were attempting to seize documents related to my party, Trinamool Congress. I managed to retrieve them. This ineffective Union Home Minister cannot safeguard the country but is trying to procure my party's documents through the ED. I contacted Pratik, and the ED officials were trying to confiscate his mobile phone and hard drives. This Union Home Minister is truly the naughtiest and nastiest in the country,” the Chief Minister stated.
She further mentioned her intention to visit I-PAC's Salt Lake office, where the ED raids were concurrently taking place. It is worth noting that I-PAC has been functioning as the vote-strategy agency for the Trinamool Congress since 2020, the year prior to the last Assembly elections in West Bengal, held in 2021.
In response to the Chief Minister's statements and actions, the Leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari, remarked that Banerjee was overstepping by trying to interfere with the operations of a constitutional authority.
“Previously, when officials from the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) visited the home of then-Kolkata Police Commissioner and current acting Director General of state Police, Rajeev Kumar, she attempted to obstruct that process and even staged a sit-in against the CBI in the city,” Adhikari noted.
“Appropriate legal measures should be initiated against the Chief Minister as well. Why is she concerned about the ED's raid at the office of a private corporate entity?” he questioned.
