What Details Does the Centre Want from the ED Regarding the I-PAC Office Raid?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, January 9 (NationPress) The Union Home Ministry is requesting a comprehensive report from the Enforcement Directorate (ED) regarding the events that transpired on January 8. This pertains to the simultaneous raid and search operations conducted by officials from the central agency at the Kolkata office of the India Political Action Committee (I-PAC) and the residence of co-founder Pratik Jain.
On Thursday, as these simultaneous raid and search operations were occurring at the I-PAC office situated in Salt Lake on the northern outskirts of Kolkata, as well as at Pratik Jain's residence on Loudon Street in central Kolkata, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee arrived at the sites. She visited Jain’s residence first before continuing to the I-PAC office, accompanied by senior state administrative and police officials.
Reports indicate that she departed the locations with several paper files and electronic documents. In light of this, the Union Home Ministry, led by Amit Shah, has called for a detailed report from the ED regarding the matter.
The ED, which operates under the Union Finance Ministry, has already submitted an initial report to its parent ministry, and will now provide a separate report to the Union Home Ministry, according to sources familiar with the developments.
Additionally, the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), whose personnel accompanied the ED officials during the raids, has also submitted its own report to the Union Home Ministry.
As the CRPF's parent ministry is the Union Home Ministry, sources revealed that the Ministry has instructed the ED to include information about any obstacles faced by the state administrative machinery led by the Chief Minister during the raid and search operations on Thursday.
The ED has also been tasked with detailing the involvement of senior police and administrative officials from the state government who were present with the Chief Minister at the two locations during the raid and search operations.
According to a source, "The report will be compiled by the ED’s regional office in Kolkata and initially sent to the agency’s headquarters in New Delhi, from where it will subsequently be forwarded to the Union Home Ministry."
On Friday, the Calcutta High Court’s single-judge bench, presided over by Justice Suvra Ghosh, will concurrently hear three petitions related to the ED’s operations on Thursday.
The primary petition is lodged by the ED, accusing West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee of misusing her constitutional authority by allegedly obstructing the official duties of Central agency officials during the raid and search operations at these two locations.
There are two counter-petitions against the ED’s main petition, one from Pratik Jain himself and the other from the Trinamool Congress.
