Will Kolkata Police Pursue Details of ED Officers After I-PAC Raids?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, Jan 12 (NationPress) The Kolkata Police have made the decision to formally reach out to the Enforcement Directorate (ED) to request the names and particulars of the officers who carried out raids last week at the I-PAC office located in Salt Lake and at the residence of its director, Pratik Jain, situated on Loudon Street.
At the same time, investigators from the city police will persist in their efforts to identify both ED and CRPF personnel using CCTV footage collected from the two sites.
Sources indicate that investigators have already discovered that an ED Assistant Director was in charge of the raid at Jain’s home last Thursday. An official request for confirmation and information will be sent to the ED via email.
The police are also working to identify six Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel who were on security duty during the operation. Investigators have learned that these six CRPF personnel were assigned to provide security for the ED team during their raid at Jain’s residence. The Kolkata Police will be reaching out to the CRPF’s Eastern Regional Office to obtain their details.
As part of the investigation, police officers visited Pratik Jain’s residence on Saturday and confiscated all CCTV footage and digital video recorders (DVRs) from the premises. They have also recorded statements from Jain’s household staff and security personnel, and have seized the building’s security register.
Investigators are scrutinizing whether ED officers registered their names in the security log on the day of the raid, and if so, what specific details were noted. If necessary, police may also interview Pratik Jain, his wife, and his mother, according to sources. The building’s facility manager has already been called in for questioning.
Preliminary findings suggest that ED officers entered Jain’s residence around 6:20 a.m. on Thursday and wrapped up their raid by approximately 2:50 p.m. The Kolkata Police arrived on scene later, between 11:15 a.m. and 11:20 a.m.
Investigators are piecing together the timeline of events before and after the police's arrival using footage from various sources, including CCTV cameras and police body-worn cameras. Several officers present at the scene were equipped with body cameras, and the footage is under thorough examination, as reported by sources.
On the previous Thursday, ED officials executed searches at Pratik Jain’s residence on Loudon Street and the I-PAC office in Salt Lake in relation to an alleged coal smuggling case. Following the news of the raid, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee visited the residence. The Trinamool Congress leader claimed that ED officials seized documents related to elections, candidate lists, election strategy papers, and electronic records under the pretense of the raids.
As a result, the Chief Minister filed complaints at both the Shakespeare Sarani Police Station and the Bidhannagar Electronic Complex Police Station, alleging the theft of Trinamool Congress election-related documents. Based on these complaints, the Kolkata Police have initiated an investigation into the purported removal of party documents and electronic data during the ED operation.
