Why was a CRPF unit deployed for security at the ED's Kolkata office?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, Jan 12 (NationPress) Following the controversies surrounding the Enforcement Directorate's (ED) raid and search operations at the Indian Political Action Committee (I-PAC) office and the residence of its co-founder Pratik Jain last week, personnel from the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) have been assigned to ensure security at the ED's office located in the Central Government Office (CAG) complex in Salt Lake, Kolkata.
Previously, a private security agency managed the security at the ED's Salt Lake office. However, starting Monday, a contingent of 12 CRPF personnel has been tasked with guarding this location, with six assigned to each of the two entry points.
According to sources familiar with the situation, the decision to deploy CRPF personnel is due to the ongoing investigation into multiple high-profile money laundering cases in West Bengal, which involve sensitive documents and evidence stored at the Salt Lake office. The Union Home Ministry opted to take precautionary measures following the I-PAC raid controversy.
Additionally, a company from the Rapid Action Force (RAF), a specialized unit of the CRPF, has been stationed at their camp in Rajarhat, Kolkata.
While currently on reserve, this unit has been brought to Kolkata for two primary reasons. First, to provide an escort for officials from investigating agencies during their raids and search operations, depending on the nature and sensitivity of the actions. Second, to address situations where officials may face significant resistance, such as during attempts to seize documents during these operations.
It is important to note that this specialized company will not be engaged in routine operational duties. The decisions regarding the security arrangements for the ED's office at Salt Lake, as well as the standby position of the special unit, were made by the Union Home Ministry in light of the recent controversies involving the ED's actions at the I-PAC office and Pratik Jain's residence.
