Jammu, Feb 12 (NationPress) In a significant development, the Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board (SASB), during its 50th meeting led by Jammu and Kashmir Lt Governor Manoj Sinha, has made the decision to enhance the accidental insurance coverage for registered Amarnath Yatris, service providers, and Pujaris from Rs 5 lakh to Rs 10 lakh. This move aims to bolster the safety net for all stakeholders involved in the annual pilgrimage.
Officials reported that this decision was reached during the meeting presided over by the Lieutenant Governor, who also serves as the Chairman of the SASB.
Furthermore, the Board announced that the ‘Pratham Pooja’ for the 2026 pilgrimage will take place on June 29, coinciding with ‘Jyeshtha Purnima’. The official start date for the Yatra will be confirmed shortly, as stated by a spokesperson.
Every year, millions of pilgrims journey to the 3,880-metre-high sacred cave shrine of Amarnath, where the naturally formed ice ‘Shivlingam’ receives worship.
The Yatra occurs via two routes: the traditional 48-km Pahalgam route in Anantnag district and the shorter but steeper 14-km Baltal route in Ganderbal district.
The Board has also approved a laser and sound show dedicated to ‘Baba Barfani’ in Srinagar and Jammu, showcasing the spiritual and cultural heritage of the Union Territory.
In addition to doubling the accidental insurance cover for registered Yatris, service providers, officials, seasonal workers, and Pujaris, the Board discussed and approved various welfare measures for SASB employees.
Lt Governor Sinha directed officials to pinpoint suitable locations for erecting toilet facilities along the Yatra routes. He also instructed the installation of shelters and rain covers along the paths for pilgrims, service providers, and security personnel.
The meeting evaluated ongoing infrastructure projects, the dissemination of Yatra-related information, insurance coverage for ponies, the extension of online and pre-paid services, registration protocols, disaster preparedness and mitigation plans, and the provision of medical assistance.
Moreover, the Board deliberated on langar and volunteer services, security and surveillance measures, the installation of crash barriers and safety railings along precarious stretches on both routes, and the progress of works undertaken by various departments, as per the spokesperson.
The annual Hindu pilgrimage to the Himalayan cave shrine attracts devotees from all over the nation. Upholding a time-honored tradition, members of the local Muslim community also contribute to facilitating the peaceful execution of the Yatra.
