Amarnath Yatra 2026: J&K L-G Manoj Sinha urges pilgrims to carry valid registration
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Saturday, 4 July 2026, issued a firm appeal to pilgrims planning the Shri Amarnath Ji Yatra (SANJY) 2026, urging them not to commence their journey without a valid Yatra Registration Permit. The directive came after a high-level review meeting chaired by Sinha revealed that an unusually large number of unregistered pilgrims had been arriving at the Yatra base camps, causing significant delays and logistical strain.
What the Review Meeting Found
The high-level meeting, attended by senior civil and security officials, assessed the overall management and ground situation of the ongoing Yatra. Lt Governor Sinha reviewed pilgrim movement, traffic management, security arrangements, accommodation capacity, and registration status across Yatra tracks.
A key concern flagged during the meeting was the surge of pilgrims arriving without confirmed registration, resulting in long waiting times and mounting pressure on the administration's logistics framework. Officials reiterated that only pilgrims holding a valid registration for their designated date will be permitted to proceed on tracks leading to the Holy Cave Shrine.
Supreme Court Orders and Pilgrim Ceiling
The Lieutenant Governor underscored that the Yatra is being conducted strictly in accordance with a prescribed ceiling on daily pilgrim movement along the Yatra tracks, pursuant to orders of the Supreme Court of India. Adherence to the registration schedule is therefore not merely administrative — it is a legal requirement tied to the court's directives on safety and crowd management.
The administration has made clear that unregistered pilgrims who arrive at Jammu and Kashmir will not be allowed to proceed on the Yatra, and has urged such pilgrims to defer their travel by a few days to avoid inconvenience.
Directions to Departments and Security Agencies
Sinha directed all departments and security agencies to maintain seamless coordination and continuous liaison with all stakeholders — including Langar organisations, service providers, and NGOs — to ensure a safe, smooth, and spiritually enriching pilgrimage experience.
He emphasised that inter-agency coordination must remain tight throughout the Yatra season to address any ground-level challenges swiftly.
Officials Present at the Meeting
The review meeting was attended by Atal Dulloo, Chief Secretary; Nalin Prabhat, Director General of Police, J&K; S.J.M. Gillani, Special DG, Coordination, PHQ; Chandraker Bharti, Principal Secretary, Home Department; Pankaj Thakur, Joint Director, Intelligence Bureau; and Dr Mandeep K. Bhandari, Principal Secretary to the Lieutenant Governor and CEO, Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board. Senior officers from the Civil Administration, Police, Security Forces, and other concerned departments were also present.
With the Yatra season at its peak, pilgrims are being strongly advised to complete the mandatory registration process and secure a valid permit before beginning their journey to Jammu and Kashmir.
