Who Was Arun Jaitley

Arun Jaitley (1952–2019) was one of the BJP's most versatile leaders — a senior advocate, a formidable parliamentary debater, and a Cabinet heavyweight across multiple portfolios including Finance, Defence, Law and Justice, Corporate Affairs, and Information and Broadcasting. His most consequential achievement as Finance Minister was shepherding the Goods and Services Tax (GST) through Parliament — a landmark overhaul of India's indirect tax architecture that had been debated for over a decade before it was finally enacted under the Narendra Modi government.

Jaitley passed away on 24 August 2019 at the age of 66 following prolonged illness.
