Amaravati, Jan 11 (NationPress) - As the Supreme Court prepares to hear Telangana's petition against the proposed Polavaram-Nallamala Sagar link project on January 12, Andhra Pradesh's Water Resources Minister Nimmala Ramanaidu has instructed his legal team to deliver compelling arguments in favor of the project.
Senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi is representing Andhra Pradesh's interests in the Supreme Court.
During a video conference, the minister demanded that senior irrigation officials compile all relevant documentation related to the case for the legal team’s review.
Participants in the video conference included Irrigation Special Secretary Sai Prasad, Advisor Venkateswara Rao, Engineer-In-Chief Narasimha Murthy, along with lawyers and senior officials from the Inter-State Irrigation department.
The minister questioned the rationale behind opposing the utilization of 200 TMC of water from the Godavari river, which flows downstream into the sea and is wasted.
He expressed disappointment that while reaching out for collaboration, Telangana is resorting to legal action that could disadvantage Andhra Pradesh.
Ramanaidu emphasized that the project aims to exploit only 200 TMC of the annual 3000 TMC of Godavari water that goes unutilized.
He asserted that according to the Godavari Water Disputes Tribunal (GWDT) award, Andhra Pradesh is entitled to harness surplus water, as it is a downstream state within the Godavari basin, and can utilize excess floodwaters without undermining the rights of neighboring states.
The minister clarified that the project's goal is to redirect water that is currently lost to the sea to the Rayalaseema region, enhancing its agricultural viability.
He reported that the project feasibility report has been submitted to the Central government, with adjustments being made according to their feedback.
He also noted that the tenders related to the DPR (Detailed Project Report) are simply initial preparations, and the project will proceed only after securing all necessary legal approvals.
In a previous statement, Telangana's Irrigation Minister N. Uttam Kumar Reddy firmly declared that the Telangana government would never endorse the construction of the Polavaram-Nallamala Sagar link project.
He claimed that the proposals from the Andhra Pradesh government violate the Godavari Water Disputes Tribunal 1980 award and interstate water regulations.
