Chennai, Sep 28 (NationPress) Former President of the Tamil Nadu BJP, K. Annamalai, has called for a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the tragic stampede at the Karur rally that resulted in the deaths of 40 individuals. He accused the state police and local authorities of severe negligence.
After visiting the families affected, Annamalai stated that the calamity could have been prevented with improved organization and security measures.
"This is not the fault of TVK Chief Vijay. It is the duty of the state police and intelligence to foresee crowd dynamics and allocate forces sufficiently. Why was a seven-hour event permitted? A two-hour timeframe would have sufficed. The state government’s plan for a one-man commission led by a former judge, handpicked by the Chief Minister, raises questions of fairness," he remarked.
Annamalai criticized the venue as inappropriate for such a large assembly, highlighting its limited capacity and narrow exits.
"The location cannot accommodate even 5,000 people. While the state police claimed that 500 personnel were on duty, fewer than 100 were actually present on the scene. The local administration has failed spectacularly. This DMK government must take full responsibility for the shortcomings in intelligence and manpower deployment," he added.
Representing the Karur BJP unit, Annamalai pledged Rs 1 lakh in compensation to each victim's family.
He also called on actor-turned-politician Vijay and his party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), to be more responsible in organizing future public events.
"Weekend rallies draw families with children. Why did children have to suffer? The planning of this gathering was flawed. Vijay needs to be accountable and present on-site to address these issues," Annamalai stated.
In response to accusations regarding inadequate security, Tamil Nadu’s Additional Director General of Police (law and order), S. Davidson Devasirvatham, clarified that the incident was not due to an intelligence failure.
He mentioned that the police had initially rejected TVK's venue suggestions due to safety concerns but approved the location after prior events with up to 15,000 attendees had been conducted safely.
"Adequate lighting and security measures were in place. However, some crowd management protocols were breached, leading to a registered case. Further investigation will clarify accountability," the ADGP informed reporters.
The stampede occurred on Saturday evening as thousands of supporters awaited Vijay's arrival, leading to panic and chaos.
Many fainted from the heat and overcrowding, while several were trampled in the surge.
The families of the victims are seeking accountability and enhanced crowd safety protocols for future political gatherings.
