Will Vijay Face the CBI Today in Connection with the Karur Stampede?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Chennai, Jan 12 (NationPress) Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief Vijay is set to appear before the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) at its New Delhi office today for interrogation related to the tragic stampede that occurred during a political rally in Karur district, Tamil Nadu.
The unfortunate event took place on September 27 at Veluchamipuram, where a large number of attendees had gathered for a campaign rally featuring Vijay. Due to extreme overcrowding and reported failures in managing the crowd, a stampede ensued, claiming the lives of 41 individuals and injuring over 100 others.
This incident sparked significant public outrage and prompted judicial oversight, leading the Supreme Court to instruct the CBI to take charge of the investigation.
Following the court's directive, a specialized CBI team from Delhi has been stationed in Karur for weeks to meticulously investigate the situation.
As reported by officials, the agency has interviewed more than 200 people, including relatives of the deceased, injured victims, ambulance drivers, eyewitnesses, and local residents. Additionally, statements have been collected from several officials and political figures associated with the rally.
Among those already interrogated are TVK leaders N. Anand, Adhav Arjun, and CTR Nirmal Kumar, in addition to the Karur District Collector and the Superintendent of Police. Many were summoned to Delhi as the investigation advanced.
As part of reconstructing the event, CBI officials transported Vijay’s campaign vehicle to Karur to conduct a thorough technical and forensic examination. The vehicle’s driver during the incident, Paraneetharan, was requested to reenact the events from his seat alongside Vijay to better understand the circumstances surrounding the stampede and pinpoint any potential oversights.
With the investigation now entering a pivotal phase, the CBI formally summoned Vijay to appear today, January 12.
Sources suggest that investigators will likely probe Vijay with targeted questions concerning crowd management, security measures, event permissions, and the overall execution of the rally. Given the sensitive political atmosphere, the Union Home Ministry has asked the Delhi Police Commissioner to ensure adequate security for Vijay.
Extensive security measures have been implemented under Y-category standards, involving his personal security team, Central Reserve Police Force personnel, and local police officials.
Vijay has departed from Chennai via a private flight and is anticipated to head straight to the CBI office in Delhi.
As this prominent leader gears up for questioning, the case has captivated national attention, with political analysts closely observing the investigation's potential broader political ramifications in the near future.
