Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Chennai, March 14 (NationPress) Actor-turned-politician and President of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), Vijay is set to depart for New Delhi this evening to face questioning from the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) regarding the unfortunate stampede that took place during his campaign rally in Karur last year.
The CBI has issued a new summons requiring Vijay to report to their office in Delhi on Sunday as part of the ongoing inquiry into the tragic incident.
Sources indicate that the TVK leader is expected to leave Chennai around 3 p.m. today, arriving in the national capital in time for the interrogation.
This case relates to the stampede that occurred on September 27 during Vijay's campaign rally in Karur, where a large crowd gathered, resulting in a chaotic situation as attendees surged forward.
Tragically, 41 individuals, including women and children, lost their lives in the stampede, raising significant concerns about crowd management and safety protocols at large political events.
In the wake of the incident, the CBI took over the case to conduct a thorough investigation, examining various aspects such as the organization of the rally, crowd control strategies, permissions granted for the event, and the involvement of local officials and organizers.
Previously, Vijay had appeared before CBI investigators on January 12 and January 19 at their New Delhi office, where he was interrogated regarding the planning and execution of the rally and the events leading to the stampede.
The agency issued another summons for March 10; however, Vijay communicated his pre-existing commitments and requested a later date for questioning.
He also sought permission to be questioned in Chennai, but the CBI denied this request, insisting that the interrogation occur at their headquarters in Delhi.
Following this, the CBI sent another summons for Vijay to appear on March 15 in New Delhi.
Sources close to the TVK have stated that Vijay is committed to cooperating fully with the investigation and will travel to Delhi this evening to comply with the CBI's summons.
The CBI is anticipated to persist in its investigation into the circumstances surrounding the Karur stampede to ascertain accountability for this tragic event.
