Chennai, Jan 8 (NationPress) The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has taken significant steps in its investigation into the tragic Karur stampede that occurred on September 27, 2025, resulting in the loss of 41 lives during a rally led by Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) founder Vijay. The agency has started summoning police officers who were responsible for security during the rally.

Sources indicate that several law enforcement officials have received summons related to the bandobast plan created for Vijay's visit. The summons includes personnel assigned to various locations within the district, particularly in Velusamypuram, where the actor-turned-politician addressed a large crowd from his caravan.

The traffic police, tasked with managing vehicle movement that day, are also being called in for questioning.

In prior phases of the inquiry, the CBI had questioned senior district officials, including the then District Collector M. Thangavel and Superintendent of Police K. Jose Thangaiah.

The current investigation is centered on reviewing the security arrangements that were in place on the day of the rally.

The CBI was prompted to re-register this case following directives from the Supreme Court on October 13, 2025.

As part of their investigation, the agency has acquired the comprehensive bandobast plan which includes the names, ranks, and assigned duties of police personnel involved in the TVK rally.

Records show that approximately 500 police personnel were deployed to ensure safety and manage crowd control during Vijay's visit.

Currently, several of these officers are being summoned for inquiry.

The questioning is taking place at the Circuit House in Karur, which has been utilized by the CBI as a temporary office since assuming the investigation in October 2025.

On a daily basis, an average of five to ten police personnel meet with the agency.

During these sessions, CBI officials are probing the personnel about their specific duty locations in Velusamypuram and other sites, the length of their deployment, their original duty stations, and the identity of the officers who designated them for security tasks.

Meanwhile, activists and some residents of Karur have approached CBI officials to share information regarding the stampede. The agency has assured them that their testimonies will be considered after the questioning of police personnel is concluded.

This stampede, one of the most severe incidents in recent Tamil Nadu history, unfolded amidst a massive turnout for the TVK rally, leading to widespread calls for accountability and systemic reforms in crowd management and event security.
