New Delhi, Sep 30 (NationPress) In light of former Union Minister P. Chidambaram's recent disclosure that the then United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government contemplated military action following the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks, but ultimately held back due to pressure from the United States and diplomatic counsel, BJP leaders have vehemently criticized the Congress party. They are calling for an apology from both Chidambaram and Sonia Gandhi.
In response to Chidambaram's remarks, senior BJP figure Ravi Shankar Prasad stated, “This revelation is not surprising. We have long pointed out their shortcomings. Why has Chidambaram suddenly recalled this after so many years?”
BJP MP Arun Sao lambasted the Congress party for its approach to national security, asserting, “In the event of a terror attack, the government should stand firm and not yield to pressure. Under Prime Minister Modi, India is taking strong measures against cross-border terrorism. It reflects on leadership skills. The Congress seems to align itself with Pakistan; they undermine the Army, disregard the Constitution, and show little regard for national security.”
BJP leader Rameshwar Sharma remarked, “Congress members are gradually unveiling the truth. Had they acknowledged this back then, they would have faced outright rejection from the nation. When Atal Bihari Vajpayee was Prime Minister, despite US urging against nuclear tests, he proceeded, emphasizing national pride. Similarly, PM Modi executed surgical strikes. Today, neither the US nor China can dictate India's actions. Chidambaram and Sonia Gandhi owe the nation an apology. Had they acted decisively post-26/11, we might have averted future terror threats.”
Another BJP leader, Asim Arun, criticized the Congress government, stating, “What Chidambaram revealed is unsurprising. The Congress-led UPA was notorious for its policy paralysis. We all knew Pakistan orchestrated the 26/11 attacks. PM Modi responded decisively to incidents in Pulwama and Pahalgam. That is true leadership. The Congress failed, leading to their removal. The public will continue to support us for our decisive governance.”
Chidambaram, during a recent interview, mentioned, “Just two or three days after I assumed office, Condoleezza Rice met with me and the Prime Minister to convey, ‘Please don’t react.’ I reminded her that it was a government decision. However, the thought of retaliation did cross my mind.”
He further disclosed that then-Prime Minister Manmohan Singh explored the possibility of retaliation while the attacks were ongoing. Ultimately, the UPA government was advised by the Ministry of External Affairs and senior diplomats against any military response.
