New Delhi, April 27 (NationPress) Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology, Ashwini Vaishnaw, stated on Sunday that India is currently realizing "Make in India" on a global scale, as emerging reports indicate that tech giant Apple might relocate the complete assembly of iPhones intended for the US to India by next year.
Vaishnaw shared a newspaper excerpt on the social media platform X with the caption "Make in India for global scale", underscoring the nation’s escalating prowess in international manufacturing.
As per a report from the Financial Times, Apple is contemplating the transfer of its entire iPhone assembly operations for the US market to India by next year.
This would represent a significant advancement in Apple's global manufacturing approach as the company aims to lessen its reliance on China.
However, the ultimate decision will hinge on how swiftly India can enhance its supply chain and the developments in the ongoing trade discussions between China and the US.
The report highlighted that former US President Donald Trump had also been urging Apple to shift its production away from China amid trade tensions.
Trump recently affirmed that negotiations regarding tariffs with China are still in progress.
Meanwhile, Apple's contract manufacturers in India are already ramping up their operations.
Foxconn's new facility in Bengaluru is anticipated to become operational this month and has the potential to produce up to 20 million iPhones at maximum capacity.
Apple's manufacturing capabilities in India are already remarkable.
In the previous year, iPhones valued at $22 billion were assembled in India, with Foxconn in Tamil Nadu contributing nearly 50 percent of Apple's exports.
Exports from Foxconn's factory have soared over 40 percent compared to the same period last year.
Currently, India is responsible for nearly 20 percent of Apple's overall iPhone production globally, highlighting the country's importance in the brand's international strategies.
The Indian market is also experiencing robust growth for Apple.
In just the first quarter of 2025, over three million iPhones were shipped from India—a new record.
This surging demand has been bolstered by affordability initiatives such as no-cost EMIs, cashback offers, and discounts available through online retail platforms.
Experts believe Apple could sustain an annual growth rate between 10 to 15 percent in India this year.
